Morning folks...I have a dr appt today that I'm attempting to cancel since my children are home AGAIN on a snow delay. :whatever: I rarely go to the doctor so it kinda sucks when I have it all worked out that this crap happens...ok, that's for the whiny zone...
I guess I'll figure out what I need to do in the next hour or so...lol
TOTD: Why do you think people dislike going to the doctors? Well those who do? Do you think people are apprehensive of something being wrong? Do some people have issues with even constructive feedback being seen as criticism? Or do they just not like being poked, prodded, stuck, felt up, etc? Do you dislike going to the doctor?
I actually never minded going to the doctor when I have a good relationship with the doctor. Doctor's who rush, don't take concerns seriously(or take them over-seriously) I don't like going back to and then I hate having to look for another doctor when that one doesn't work out--never mind the wait times to get seen in some cases with a good doctor.
-
I'm just doing nothing, probably going to lay a floor later and build some heaters.
totd: I hate the doctor...........I don't want any bad news, so for myself to get to the doctor I have to be hurting really bad

Re: TOTD
When you go to the doctor, you end up having to deal with the $#*%! insurance company!!!
-
I dunno.
I don't mind going to physicians who know me.
What gets me is going to physicians who don't know what I am (deaf), and so they jump to all sorts of conclusions, wrong conclusions.
One can take a large black Magic Marker and scrawl DEAF on the initial form, but as I've learned from a lifetime of learning, physicians don't read anything; they must be illiterate.
I've had some interesting visits with physicians, but I'd just as soon prefer dull visits with physicians who know what I am.

TOTD:
My grandfather was a surgeon. While growing up, I never "went to see the doctor"...I went to see my grandfather and he fixed whatever was wrong. I had always planned to be a doctor. I have the aptitude, but not the ability. To this day I still feel some regret for not even trying to get into med school, but now I design hospitals. In a way, what I do helps heal people.
I think a lot of folks don't like doctor visits because: 1. Most of the time when they see a doctor, they are sick. A subconscious association may develop. 2. Doctors often tell us what we do not want to hear...eat better, lose weight, take this foul tasting med, etc. 3. Doctors are in control of the situation, not us. It's in our nature to try to be in control of all aspects of our lives.

Most physcians these days are in too much of a hurry...especially if they do not know you.

No kiddin! But where I live, you take what you can get. Not a whole lot of doctors are accepting new patients.
FWIW--I like mine. He does spend some time with me when I go for my followups and explains my meds (I'm Type II) and why he's changing them (not real hard to understand after last visit).
-
TOTD: I don't go that often. In the last 6 years, I've been to sick call once, and that was because I had busted my head open and had a concussion. The usual is my yearly check up, or the optometrist to get my prescription updated.
I don't like going though, because it takes so long. I can be real impatient at times, and sitting in a hospital just isn't my idea of a good time.
Insurance isn't that big a deal to me, becuase I don't have to deal with it. If I get an off base provider when we go back though, I'm sure I'll get to learn the joys of it.
-
I'm feeling a tad under the weather today, but I can't quite figure out why I don'tfeel 100%. It's odd.
TOTD: I don't mind the Dr once I find one I like. I'm still up in the air about the one I've found here so far. I hate finding a new Dr. And I hate when Dr's don't really LISTEN.
-
TOTD: I don't mind going. But, even with my doctor who I've had forever, it's a challenge because I think they develop a certain mindset on treatment protocols. They seem intimidated by informed patients. And there's a difference between informed and "know it all".
-
Well, I just got called by my employer. They need me to work 3-10 tonight. :( Oh well, at least I get a decent paycheck for this week. And I can sleep in tomorrow anyway, since my first class isn't until 11:30. :cheersmate:
TOTD: As a kid, I feared going to the doctor, because I wasn't too fond of shots (with my medical history, those visits occurred a LOT!) But as I've grown up, I've become a lot less fearful, and more used to it. And I NEED to be used to it, if I am t o be working in the medical field. I'll be giving out shots, even as an MRI technician (I was told we wouldn't have to do that, but during my job-shadowing, I saw techs giving injections. They were NOT nurses).
My sis on the other hand, may be 26 years old, but she still has to have someone hold her hand when she gets a shot at the doctor.
I really dislike my family doctor these days, but her PA is excellent. I always request the PA when scheduling an appointment.

That's how I was with the ob/gyn I delivered my first two children with. She was ok, but it was her NP that I really liked and I made most of my appts during my pregnancy with her.

I'm doing laundry today, same as every day. I'm going to do another donation quilt today too.
TOTD:
I don't like going to the doctor because it takes half of my day. To drive down to Dallas to go to Baylor takes me about 45 minutes each way. Then the wait at the doctor's office. Then I wait to get blood drawn (every time I go I have to have blood drawn). It's always hurry up and wait. I go often so that is probably why I hate going. I love my doctor but he likes to perform tests to "make sure" everything is ok so I feel like every time I go he is going to want me to have an MRI or angiogram or something.
I also hate going to the regular doctor who is about 5 minutes away because the wait is always long and I seem to go there at least once a month because one of my kids seems to get sick or I get sick. Sometimes I feel my life is laundry and doctor appointments.

((((HUGZ))))
TOTD: Had a new audiogram done today. My hearing has gotten worse in the past 6 years. <sigh> I knew it had. I've been avoiding group activities / conversations for a while now. Isolation is a killer to your mental health. I've been proactive though. I've started American sign language classes (beginner level, once a week) and am really enjoying them. Our class has about 20 members. Our instructor is completely deaf so we have an interpreter. The ironic thing is that though I wear 2 hearing aids, I still have to have someone interpret for me. I feel awkward. I really don't like having attention focused on me. Unfortunately, for now, there's no way around this.

Ok, why did I not know you were going through this? My sister-in-law's Mom and Dad are completely deaf. Her Mom was born deaf and her Dad became deaf when he was younger. One of them (I can't remember which one) can read lips, have you tried it and if you have is it hard?

Wow. Best of luck to you... Losing one of your senses really stinks. I walked right into some girl at work, didn't even see her. And I almost walked into some guy carrying his Big Guzzle of soda without a lid :(. Being visually impaired is a huge pile of suck.

It looks really pretty, but the people here can't drive for shit. :bird:

I am classified as HOH, which is hard of hearing. I'm not deaf (yet, and I hope never). It's been 10 or 11 yrs now that I've been wearing hearing aids. I've been wearing 2 since 2002. I was doing my internships in dental assisting when I realized I couldn't hear, even close up.
I've never learned to read lips. It's a common misconception that those with a hearing disability can read lips. I don't know the stats, but I imagine it's a small percentage.
Like I say, isolation is just as disabling. I had been taking care of my mother (as her guardian) up until last May. At 1st I did anything I could to occupy myself when Mother's level of need was not too high. I went back to school. I did volunteer work. She did a good job of whittling away at my esteem and confidence (manic / bi-polar / diabetic / COPD w/oxygen 24/7, ad nauseum). Reasons enough to relinquish my duties to someone else after almost 8 yrs. My sister is her care giver now. I love her but when you start to think of how easy it would be just to reach out and snap her neck like a greenbean .... it's time to make other arrangements.
I've recently joined a support group for HOH. I've also linked up with vocational rehabilitation and some other services here. I just want my life back. I want to be productive again. I'm tired of feeling "broken" and like I'm not necessary or valued any more.
<sigh> Things will get better.

I'm gonna post a series of pics later...taken every 15 mins from my office window...the change is quite dramatic. It seems really odd to be snowing like crazy and have clear blue sky above. :mental:

I have hearing "issues" as well, but opposite of yours. I hear everything...equally. In a crowded room, I hear everything at the same volume. It's extremely difficult for me to sort out one particular voice...even if that person is sitting right next to me.

DD - I'm sending you a hug. I didn't know you were going through this either!

Thanks Chris! The one thing that I am sure of is that God has a sense of humor. He's left me with my sense of taste in tact. I quit smoking in October of 2006 and was reacquainted with my taste buds! :hammer:
Hang in there buddy! I've been following your posts. Things will get better. For both of us. :-*

My boss is not happy with my every-other-week doctor appointments. He asked me if it was interfering with "my work". :bird:

Yikes! Have you been to an ENT or an audiologist?
In a sense, my hearing aids do (some what) the same thing. Background noise makes me crazy! It took me a while to learn to tone out the ceiling fans / motors on drink boxes / birds chirping, etc.
Do you have what I call "head noises"? The medical term is tinnitus. It's hard to describe but it's a constant buzzing or ringing. Most of the time I can ignore it. A bad sinus infection intensifies it. UGH!

Asshole!
Make sure you document EVERYTHING! What was said, by whom, day/date/time and did co-workers see/hear the exchange. The Americans with Disabilities Act protects you but discrimination of this type is VERY hard to prove. That statement there is reason enough to start watching your back my friend. Keep a journal, religiously.

No docs yet for me. My wife just swears I have "selective hearing"...she has a soft voice and insists on talking to me from another room while the tv is on and the dishwasher is running...I "can't hear her"...meaning I heard her, but her voice just got lost with everything else. Yes, I've always heard a background humming. I can also hear very high-pitched tones...above what "normal" folks can hear.

Agreed. Statements like that are out of line.

Today was a nice day. I didn't do much at work. :)
I went to Barnes & Noble after work and picked up Murdered by Mumia and The Other Boleyn Girl. :)
TOTD: I've never had a problem with seeing the doctor. I've had the same general practitioner since I was 10. He's a great doctor, very nice, to the point and no BS.
-
TOTD: I live in HCA country. It's never been a problem finding a doctor around here... you can't throw a stick without hitting at least one. I've never disliked going to the doctor. I used to live across the street from an enormous hospital.
I could do without the waiting. It's always so BORING. You wait half an hour for a five-minute checkup.

neat pics lug!!! I LOVE Nashville. I would move there in a heartbeat because I'm from Memphis and I would love to get closer to my family. And get away from here! LOL.
