As near as I can figure, the Confederate Flag didn't become a "symbol of hate" until the mid-1990's.

Good idea! Oh wait - I could start by burning a UN flag, and then add symbols of liberalism to the fire (rainbow flag, Planned Parenthood brochures, pictures of celebrities, a Democratic Underground bumpersticker, etc..) :-)

I usually don't get involved in Civil War debates; I'm a native Pennsylvanian. But it occurred to me that at the surrender at Appomattox, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, one of the greatest military heroes of all time, IMHO, led his men in a formal salute as his Confederate counterparts surrendered their colors:
"The momentous meaning of this occasion impressed me deeply. I resolved to mark it by some token of recognition...which could be no other than a salute of arms...."
If Chamberlain, a hero of Gettysburg and countless other battles, could salute the Confederate troops and their colors, shouldn't we who stand on their shoulders show respect to both sides?

That flag ACTUALLY symbolizes what was right with this nation, and the blood and lives lost defending it. Yes, we lost, and the nation as a whole lost as a result of that failure. Long gone are the personal freedoms of not having big brother and the nanny state to make sure we act right. Long gone are the rights of states to govern as the people see fit. If I didn't like the way GA operated, I could move to FL. And it would actually be different, not the same federalist bullshit we have to endure today.
