Doing tune ups oil changes etc....
So I need to get basic tools to do some mechanics for the explorer...and suggestions on required tools? I think I need something to accurately elevate the car. What are those little ramps called? I see creepers for sale...need one of those and maybe a special socket for pulling spark plugs. I think I have to go underneath the car to remove the plugs.
I have a CD scoped out that is supposedly the service repair manual completely printable for about 25 bucks.
Man, I remember working on my Datsun truck with no problems at all...of course that was the early eighties. I could take that vehicle apart with a socket wrench and a screwdriver. No way I can do that with the explorer.
Well any tips or heads up would be appreciated. I think I can pick up those ramp things at K-Mart...
Boy I'm not looking forward to this...I just finished getting my butt kicked by the new sewing machine I baught. Altho I am proud to say I have hemmed and repaired a whole bunch of my kids school clothes. but it took awhile for me to figure out (hours and hours)...

Used motor oil goes into an empty milk jug, to be concealed within your household trash.
A PCV valve is a little doohickey that lasts the life of the car. That's all you need to know.

If you can't get under an Explorer to get to the oil pan, you're a fat bastard whose carbon footprint needs to be removed as soon as possible to prevent contamination of the gene pool. I can get under my Jeep Liberty just fine, and I'm by no means thin.
FWIW, when I change my oil, I have a catch pan with a spout so that when I've drained the oil and changed the filter and the new oil put in the car, the now-empty "new" oil jug acts as a receptacle which can be filled with the "old" oil from the pan. Said jug can then be taken to Wally World where it is recycled, free of charge. The drained filter goes in the garbage.
How simple, yes?

Ummm, Steerpike, if you're having problems working on your shiny new Explorer doing oil changes and the like, they have these places that will do it for you. They usually go by the name Jiffy Lube here in California, but I'm sure they have places like that in your part of the country. Heck, they'll even fix that PCV valve for you.

PCV valves, OTOH--what's so friggin hard about them?

Teh Google. It is your friend.
PCV Valve, aka, Positive Crankcase Ventilation Valve. Keeps the exhaust gases from building up in the crankcase and cycles them back to the intake. That's good, DUmmies, otherwise you'd have higher emissions and lots more oil leakage. But be careful you put it in the right way, DUmmies! One-way valve and all that...

Yup. We have those too. And our local Auto Parts store will recycle for free. Easy peasy, and we always know our maintenance was done right. Now, as for Mr. Ford Explorer.....sure would be a shame if somehow he messed up his computer system while doing maintenance. That would be pretty durn cool.
I am almost embarassed for him on that post.

Well, to be honest, my last vehicle was an Expedition and changing the plugs (as I had to do at 100K miles) was, to put it gently, a mother****er. The back ones were virtually impossible to get to.

Was once in a fast tune and lube business with my brother. Had the scope the whole shot. I remember some of the 70's GM unibodys had to have the engine mounts removed and the motor jacked up 3" in order to get to the plugs from underneath. It sucked!!!
