Chinese workers have covered a giant steel bridge with butter because officials are fed up with traffic jams caused by people who slow down to watch suicide victims leaping to their death.
Government officials in Guangzhou in south east China ordered workers to smear butter on all of the climbable surfaces of the 1,000 foot long steel bridge.
Government spokesman Shiu Liang said: "We tried employing guards at both ends but that didn't work - and we put up special fences and notices asking people not to commit suicide here. None of it worked - and so now we have put butter over the bridge and it has worked very well. Nobody can get up there and anybody who tries either falls"
Bridge guard Wong Man said: "The butter makes the bars and frames slippery and hard to climb onto, and we can easily catch them."

Umm...wouldn't the slippery surface hasten their fall over the edge? I guess if it's too slippery to climb you can't jump?

That idea wont last long. Butter will attract all wildlife in the area, flying insects and bugs.
The smell of rancid butter will waft through the air for miles in all directions. GROSS.
It is of interest that everything else had been tried but the pesky people still lined up to jump. What does the Chinaman have to face if he is arrested for attempting suicide.
Is he charged with trying to destroy Government property, himself. What is the penalty for this act.?
So as commuters slow down to watch the action and cause traffic jams, would it be much easier and more profitable to build pull offs so drivers can pull in to watch the show.
A charge could ber placed on those who use the turn off, a food cart and rest room included.
The State could then hire actors and stunt people to fake an interesting Jump.

My coworker, from Taiwan, emailed me this article a few months ago. I am sure it is the same bridge. I think the officials have permanent nets to catch them.

A man contemplating suicide last Thursday in the southern Chinese city Guangzhou received a less-than-helpful hand when he was pushed from the bridge by an angry onlooker.
Distraught over accumulating 2 million yuan ($290,000) in debt, Chen Fuchao had been contemplating suicide for hours on the Haizhu Bridge before Lai Jiansheng approached him, shook his hand, and pushed him from the ledge where he was standing.
The not-so-gentle nudge caused Chen to fall 26 feet (8 meters) onto a semi-inflated emergency air cushion, laid out earlier by authorities. Chen survived the fall and is recovering in the hospital with injuries to his elbow and spine, China’s official Xinhua News Agency reported on Saturday.
As for Lai, push had apparently come to shove for 66-year-old, who called Chen’s activity “selfish.†The area surrounding the bridge had been sealed off during Chen’s suicide attempt, resulting in a five-hour traffic jam.
“I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish. Their action violates a lot of public interest,†Lai told Xinhua. “They do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to raise the relevant government authorities’ attention to their appeals.â€
According to Xinhua, Lai asked police if he could speak with Chen. When his offer was refused, he broke through the cordon, climbed to Chen, and greeted him with a handshake and a shove.
Lai was released on bail Friday, reported the Beijing Morning Post. The paper also said Laid has been on medication for “a mental illness†for decades and had been on his way to a hospital for his pills.
The Haizhu Bridge has been the site of 11 other suicide attempts since April.

1. You should coat it in Vaseline, layer it in jars - that will keep it, and she'll have a nice supply of petroleum jelly when she gets to school.
