What do I say to my close friend who loves "24"?

She broke my heart last week raving about how wonderful the show is, buying all the box sets, etc. I watched 5 minutes of it once and was so horrified by the violence and cruelty portrayed that I turned it off forever right then.

My impression is that this show is right-wing violence porn. Or am I wrong? Did I see a bad 5 minutes and it's actually great? Do DUers like it? My friend is pretty smart - what does she see in it?

I am going to ask her to please not talk about this show around me, as it highlights an area where our values are apparently completely opposite. Or are they? I'm ready for someone to tell me that I'm missing the point, that it actually is as good as she says.

Anyone? Bueller?

Uncle Teddy is dead and all you care about is your friend watches a TV show you don't like.

24 is a good show. Not right-wing porn at all. Even if it was, who cares? It's a free country.

But, Rush, Hannity, and Beck all need to  shut up.
 :whatever:

Yes, it's fiction, but it has real-world consequences.
See my quote from Think Progress above. And yes, when a close friend reveals that she delights in a show like this, it makes me very sad. I am sorry that my reaction did not meet with your approval. I'll try to do better next time.
"The sole purpose of life is to serve humanity." --Leo Tolstoy
Hmmmm! Real world consequences like supporting organizations like the ACLU who have on several occasions defended NAMBLA? Projection....look it up genious! :whatever:

Th DUmbass should love it.  A black president and all the terrorists are non-muslim whites.  Just like the unicorn world we live in now.

"24" was great the first couple of seasons, even with all the whispering that they seem to think is dramatic. It has jumped the shark big-time. The last season was so excruciatingly bad they had the characters doing PSAs in commercial breaks promoting Algore's global warming. I hated myself for watching the first couple of episodes and then riding the damn thing all the way to the ground. Never again. Stay in the drunk tank, Jack Bauer.

They did really?  How repugnant.  I used to love it and waited all week for it, a few years ago.  I now only have satellite so I don't have network so I haven't seen it.  It would have jumped the shark for me with Janine Garafalo.

If any "friend" said to me, sniffily, that our values were opposite on something, I believe I would take offense and that friendship would be gone or at least chilled.  Know when to keep your damn mouth shut.
