This year, vendors across the Midwest are trying out new products and some are offering a sneak peek of what you might find at the Iowa State Fair.
Vendors in Minnesota and Wisconsin want their tasty treats to be the top fair favorites.
One vendor is promising chocolate covered bacon that's drizzled with some sea salt.
Another vendor is offering 1/3 pound of bacon that is fried and then caramelized with maple syrup. Oh yeah, and it's of course served up on a stick.
If you're looking for a treat to cool yourself off, how about a pickle pop? It's pickle juice frozen in a push up sleeve.
Fair officials said you might see some of these new experiemental treats at the Iowa State Fair

Damn, Rob, I was going to post something about that too. :banghead:
A bar I was at a few weeks ago was offering up the chocolate covered bacon as samples before they went to serve it at the fair.

Did you sample it?
My Midwest friends are all asking each other on facebook if they found the chocolate covered bacon at various fairs...

*sigh*
Yeah, welcome to the upper Mid West. :(

Pickle Pops aren't new. They've been around the State Fair of Texas. So has "chicken fried" bacon.
I wanted to pioneer Deep Fried Boston Creme Pie On A Stick at this year's fair. I didn't get my research done in time. Oh well. There's always 2010.

You know what rocks about that? The salt and the sweet together...yum! If you have 2 pieces in one year, I doubt it's going to seal your fate. Problem is people eat several pieces at every fair they go to over the course of 3 months in addition to fries, burgers, and other assorted fried, dipped, and breaded objects. :hammer:

Fried Snickers bars. Nuff said.

Yeah, but they're as old as the corny dog now.

Yes, that is why the Fletchers still make a million dollars in three weeks at the State Fair of Texas. They are the original corny dog.

Actually, Hot Dog on a Stick is a chain formed in CA just after WWII. Homemade lemonade, cheese on a stick, dogs on a stick. Pretty simple, yet damn good.

The Fletchers debuted their corny dog in 1938. Hot Dog On A Stick didn't come along until 1946, right after WWII.

And Barney Frank started practicing on them right after that.

Naughty Man, :-)
Now if I were to make a stick food I would put deep fried peanut butter and mushed pickles on a stick. Deep fried peanut butter with bananas on a stick.
I think that sparky is doing something with Boston cream pie. Turn that sucker inside out, the cream to the stick, then the cake then the chocolate, like covering a Twinkies with chocolate then frying.
Now you guys got me hungry for something different say Kimchee or goats milk.
, About fair food, you are betting your life eating that stuff.
At the 3rd. year I was a vegetarian I found that a trip to the market was interesting If there was one small piece of rotting meat I could smell it at the door .Produce department was a hoot. I caused a few double takes as I smelled the string bags potatoes come in. Darn if one in that bag was rotting I knew it.
We hit every fair in our area and south to the biggies. At not one of these fairs could I go anywhere the food consesions. The smell of rancid oil filled the air, bad meat and spoiled veges caused my stomach to roll over.
So later when I gave in to my vice, meat and potatoes, I lost the ability to smell the smell the off orders.
Today I say to heck with it and order a sausage with peppers and onions.
