Oh man.
I really dislike doing this, giving attention to the juvenile primitive, because he's too easy. It's like indulging in a battle of wits with a 4-year-old kid. A Pedro Picasso the juvenile primitive isn't.

Whoa. Hold up. What's up with the "traditionalists" on here?
And by traditionalist, I mean misogynist/regressive/dense.
Sorry, but "traditionalist" is a conservative meme that means anti-progressive.
I would gladly take my future wifes last name and would gladly let my wife take my last name (if she likes). Or we can both keep our original last names. I really don't give a damn who keeps what as long as we are happy with each other.
To suggest that you wouldn't marry someone because they refuse to give up their identity is being really primitive. I hope the other person runs far away as quickly as possible. There are plenty of guys out there that aren't tools.
On Edit: I think some people need to learn what being a feminist means. I'm a feminist. Apparently some guys think that's a slur.
Oh man.

3. It's in this thread...

I won't point out specific people. It's pretty easy to find.

6. They are idiots.
Unfortunately, there are many of them. I just didn't expect that kind of shit from DUers.

7. In a family of Republicans I NEVER saw this kind of hostility for women as needing to "respect" a man by giving up her identity.
Oh, I dunno.
The "Maru Kitteh" primitive alleges to be a Nebraskan, but I have my doubts.
It's a Nebraska thing, going clear back to pioneer days of circa 1880-1910, when it was socially acceptable for women to keep their maiden names after marriage (but none of this hyphenated nonsense, other than that of those of Texan descent, but hyphenated names are a deeply-rooted part of their own culture); the egalitarianism of the frontier, as compared with the elitism, the racism, the sexism, of the blue cities and blue states.
It's not a big deal.

5. Welcome to DU
I see you've been around for a few months so you're only starting to notice that misogyny runs deep here. If you peruse the archives you'll find threads attacking abortion rights as frivolous, threads attacking single mothers as harming their children by depriving them of a father's influence, loads of misogynist language and slurs against women, threads lauding Ron Paul, and much more. You might even get some of these things in responses to this thread.
The mods do a pretty good job handling some of the worst stuff but can't be everywhere at once. If you see something that's out of line, alert on it.

What's so "progressive" about trying to destroy someone else's right to be traditional? It comes off as being terribly dishonest and hypocritical to me.

And to whine about it on another thread is being really primitive. Of course, you are a group of primitives, so we expect nothing less.

The thread that he refered to has been erased. Wonder why!

This guy has two majors, doesn't he have better things to do? Why is so concerned about this? He's not about to get laid, let alone get married. We know this because he bought a twin bed.
Anyway, my opinion is that I draw the line at a husband taking the wife's name. That's just emasculating. Sheer moonbattery.

If it's a deal-breaker for someone EITHER way, that person has no business getting married in the first place.

Hell, I work with a rather conservative fellow who just recently took his mothers maiden name to keep her family name going. Not exactly "traditional".
These DUmb****s really need to stop breaking as much methane as they do.

My dad was going to take my mother's maiden name when they got married (her father had died a little while before they met, her brother had no interest in ever having children, and she didn't want the name to end with her) and he wasn't allow to under California law. She ended up taking his.
Overall, I don't really care what name somebody uses, I plan to follow the traditional route and take my husband's name, but people can do as they wish.

My wife kept and uses her maiden name with no objections whatsoever from me.
And I'm not exactly real liberal.

Oh, undoubtedly.

Unless there's an overwhelming professional reason for not taking the husband's name, it makes me
deeply suspicious of the woman's commitment to the marriage. It's a hugely significant part of the
"traditional" package, which includes a solemn oath to God of fidelity, love, and support for the
remainder of one's mortal life. To us traditional troglodytes, changing names is important testimony
of commitment to that oath.
As it pertains to marriage, "non-traditional" is a DUmmy concept that does not include God, or fidelity,
or any other type of commitment that lasts beyond today's urges. It has been disastrous for much
of our society, since the concept of "family" is almost entirely dependent on those traditional values
of marriage.
I knew two moonbats at work who married. He wanted her to change names, she didn't want to, and
he was very badly whipped. They made a moonbat compromise, goofier even than that hyphenated
nonsense. They made up a new legal name from the first syllable of his name, and the second syllable of
her name. The resulting hybrid was a monstrosity that probably causes people they meet to think
his ancestors came from Mars.

"There are plenty of guys out there that aren't tools."....yeah but not on the leftest side.
I bet his tadpoles have to wear waterwings or drown.....which he shouldn't worry about because he sounds desperate enough to marry a woman with a dry swimming pool.

Nothing says "loser" like a man loudly declaring himself to be a feminist. Must have gone to the stevenumbers school of dating.

My wife wanted to take my surname. Matter of fact, the school where she got her master's referred to her as a hyphenated name (maiden-married names) and she got rightly pissed by it, and told them that, in no uncertain terms, that her surname was the same as mine. Then, they started to send stuff with her maiden name as her middle name. She did one of these things: :whatever:
Before we married, she would practice writing her name cursively, with my last name. Sort of gets her goat now that there's idiots out there that won't respect her wishes.

I miss the trials and tribulations of the frustrated DUmmy stevenumbers! He was inadvertently
one of the most hilarious posters in the history of the DUmp, in a class with Bouncy Balls and
TomInTib.
But he became starstruck after finding himself quoted so widely, and began trying too hard with
obvious lies. His original, naive, incredibly stupid posts are classics. They don't make 'em like that
anymore.
-
The missus took my last name, but it was something she wanted to do for several reasons - one of which was her maiden name is also a common first name. It always caused confusion.
She gave her maiden name to our first born daughter as a middle name, since Mrs. Miskie already has two middle names of her own, and didn't need a third. Having two non-hyphenated middle names also causes confusion, I imagine a third would bring about the apocalypse.
-
I chose not to take my husbands last name. Not that there was anything wrong with it but I am the last of the line with my name. Besides I have too much tied up in that name professionally. My husband does not mind a bit.
-
I'll bet DUmmies with bad credit change their names often.

As if he has any tadpoles! Besides, I'm pretty sure you can't get pregnant by having your significant other poking you in the pooper!
