Brown Bag Lunches - A plea for Help
Gonna have to start packing them again. I don't think I can survive even a week of sandwiches. I will not have access to either a refrigerator or a microwave. Need some suggestions. Thanks.

1. Soups survive a thermos relatively well
but nothing else does, although beef stew is edible.
Cold soups like gazpacho are also good in brown bags. You can do seafood and pasta salads if you put a frozen cold pack in with them to keep them too cool to be hospitable to bacteria. Corn chips and bean dip can be a good lunch. Pita bread with hummus and a salad on the side can make a more interesting sandwich option than the usual tuna fish.
Cheese and fruit will keep you going, too.
Just do buy one of the freezable packs, either at a supermarket or a drug store. They can keep things cool enough to widen your choices considerably.

Do you like Quiche? I enjoy it cold. Taboulleh Salad stuffed into a tomato is always a good standby. You can also pop a yogurt into the freezer the night before and grab it to go in the morning with a Zone Perfect Bar. I eat a yogurt and a bar for lunch several times a week. You can also enjoy a piece of fruit, celery and Peanut Butter or Cream Cheese or even a hard boiled egg. I know when I pack lunches, I like to have a variety of foods so I'm a big believer in lots of small portions of stuff.

Lots of small portions of stuff. I like that idea. I could make a rotating meal of yogurt and fruit with a hardboiled egg. Or substitute a granola bar for the fruit.
I'm looking for healthy, cheap food that I will enjoy. If I don't enjoy it then I'll never get that bag packed.

Actually, it is possible to keep tuna or seafood salad edible in a good quality Thermos. What you do is you pack ice cubes in a ziplock, and put them at the bottom of the Thermos. Get a cup or a bowl that will fit inside and fill it with salad. Tupperware makes these tiny containers with lids that are perfect. Put a ziplock with ice on top. when its lunchtime, you can add the salad to the bread then without fear of it being spoiled from the heat. Works well for other spreadable foods like cream cheese.
I forgot to add this :
the ice will be partially melted - If you buy food-grade cubes or make your own, you can pour the icewater into a glass and drink as is, or add one of those individual packs of drink mix.

I don't know what kind of job this is, but I don't think it's a desk job where you can haul out a knife and fork. What a dumb suggestion. Aside from the fact that I LOATHE taboulleh, the whole thing sounds messy and only contains about 25 calories. All their uber-healthy suggestions all contain about 5 calories. Enough to make you lunge for the potato chips at about 3:30.

Now maybe it is a small point but everyone at the DUmp claims to be just eeking out an existence.
Years ago trying to farm it here we really were and you learn to eat whatever you have available and not be fussy.
As far as his plight...get a small cooler and some ice,that will keep whatever he just has to have for lunch.

No problem - its one of those things one figures out from being on the road all day long. I deliver mail to the middle of nowhere, no restaurants, gas stations, or convenience stores anywhere along my 21 mile trek.

I have a soft-side Playmate I got at Walmart. I load it with a couple of bottles of frozen water, a soda, a V-8, a couple of sandwiches, a bag of chips, and a snack cake of some sort.
Sometimes, I forgo the sandwiches for a salad in a Tupperware bowl, with salad dressing in a smaller container.
Keeps me going on whatever postal route I'm running that day, either the 22 mile mostly in-town one to the 58 mile "circle the lake" route. I like that one, I have a picnic at the dam at the east end of the lake.... :-)
Before I became a RCA with the Postal Service, I worked as a delivery driver for a small trucking company for 20 years. Drove a truck about the size of a UPS truck, spent between 10-14 hours a day, 3-4 days a week in those trucks. Most of my routes were in the "scenic" areas of WV and Southwest VA, not many MickyDee's or even gas stations out there....
