Diffusion of Responsibility: If you see something, say something
This morning, I submitted a tip to The FBI about a possible threat to a U.S. Congressperson that was posted on the internet.
When it became clear which Congressperson specifically was at-risk, I contacted that Congressperson's office directly.
Despite the fact that dozens (perhaps hundreds or even thousands) of people had seen the same posts I had seen, I was the first person to contact the Congressperson's office, who is now looking into this.
DO NOT ASSUME JUST BECAUSE SOMETHING IS PUBLIC, OR OUT IN THE OPEN, THAT SOMEONE ELSE MUST BE DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT!
Always assume-- whether it is an assault on a public street, or a threat on the internet-- that you are the only one who will report it or take action.
Diffusion of responsibility
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Diffusion of responsibility is a social phenomenon which tends to occur in groups of people above a certain critical size when responsibility is not explicitly assigned. This phenomenon rarely ever occurs in small groups. In tests, groups of three or fewer, everyone in the group took action as opposed to groups of over ten where in almost every test, no one took action. This mindset can be seen in the phrase "No one raindrop thinks it caused the flood". Knowing this, it is always important to respond to emergencies such as a car accident in the light of the mindset, "Well there's so many people driving past this, surely someone has called 911."
Diffusion of responsibility can manifest itself:
* in a group of people who, through action or inaction, allow events to occur which they would never allow if they were alone. Examples include groupthink and the bystander effect.
* in a group of people working on a task that loses motivation because people feel less responsible and hide their lack of effort in the group (social loafing).
* in hierarchical organizations, such as when underlings claim that they were just following orders and supervisors claim that they were just issuing directives and not doing the deeds.

The Freepers were talking about self-defense against thugs

The FBI must get really tired of fired-up fanatics from all across the spectrum pinging them over every keyboard commando post (Or even innoccuous ones they choose to take out of context and mix with drugs to get the worst possible interpretation). I don't think you could pay me enough to do that job, because after about the first ten million completely specious rants there probably would be a real threat hidden in there somewhere sooner or later, and I might be too brain-stunned from all the garbage to recognized it.

That reminds me. I got two spam ads in my e-mail yesterday for penis enlargement pills.
They sounded fishy, so I forwarded them to flag@whitehouse.org
I hope the Kenyan checks them out, though genetically it's unlikely he would be a customer.

Yeah, I got one from "Anna" promising me a free private show! I hope Bam Bam can determine whether or not "Anna" is actually female!

Sorry, I just checked my "Sent" mailbox. The address is flag@whitehouse.gov -not .org.
Every day I get a lot of fishy stuff that sounds like disinformation, and I've been sending all of it to be checked out by the White House.
So far they haven't let me know whether any of it is legit, but I'm not sure what their turnaround time is.
Anyway, The One wants to check out fishy information, so the sources can be contacted and corrected, and I hope lots of people are cooperating.
If enough fishy information is forwarded to flag@whitehouse.gov, maybe someday only true sources will remain.
The One doesn't like fishy stuff.

Diffusion of responsibility
(adj) Deh-fu-shun uf reh-spon-subil-eh-tee (See also: Projection) - A physcosis suffered by a large group of mindless automatons loyal to the Democrat party of the U.S.A. Symptoms include bug eyes, frothing at the mouth and in the most severe cases an affinity for wearing layers of tinfoil in the shape of an 18th Century Tricorn hat. Human vocabulary of this group is liminted to mainly mono-sylabic grunts and screams with their most advanced form of communication being the phrase "It's Bush's fault!"

To the primitives, a threat could be something like "I think I'll go to my Congressman's town hall meeting tonight and express my opposition to Dear Leader's healthcare plan."

That's it, exactly.
That's something the primitives would indeed consider a "threat" of "physical violence."

Heh, heh! They're going to hate having to come "interogate" me! I'm not exactly close to an airport!
