Title: Need some advice
Post by: Chris_ on February 24, 2008, 04:11:26 PM

Okay, so I stepped on the scale a little while ago.  I'm 105 pounds now.  To me, that is going into dangerous territory as far as losing weight is concerned.
I'm not the type of woman who wants to be skinny as a pole.  I like having curves, thank you. ;)  I refuse to weigh less than 100 pounds (but no more than 120).

I want to maintain a weight of 110-115, preferably, but my job, as physically demanding as it is, is not allowing for that.

I need some ideas on what I can eat that might help.

Do I need protein shakes? More meat in my diet? (keep your pervy comments to yourselves with that one!  :hammer:  ).

Any ideas would really be appreciated.

Okay, I'm sorry.  You are saying that your job is so physically demanding that you fear losing too much weight?

Yep, and when I'm outside in the middle of the day(in other words, the HEAT is a big factor in that, too)  for an hour, it makes thing worse.    I know it's making me healthier, physically, but at the same time, I would like to maintain my weight, and not lose so much that I lose my figure (hey, I'm a girl. what do you expect?).

I've thought about carrying a bottle of Gatorade with me when I'm outside in the heat (it's supposed to get worse in the summer, with all the concrete).

The definitive answer to this should come from a doctor.  Assuming he finds you healthy, he might have you supplement your diet with a weight-gain product or he might have you do nothing special at all if he believes your body will compensate for the extra activity on it's own.  You probably don't want to be getting medical advise from a bunch of pervy guys from your favorite message board.

Oh, and gatorade is crap overpriced sugar water.  All you need is good quality water in the heat, but if you're worried about loss of electrolytes there are other ways to make sure you get enough.  You could also make a healthier product yourself by researching home-made gatorade.

My advice.... go back to your regular eating habits. My opinion (and you can tell me if I'm wrong) is that all the stress you've been putting up with the last month or so from the bitches in the dorm room have been contributing to your weight loss. Stress can have some screwy effects on people.

Okay.  I'll be heading to the campus clinic on Monday to have a possible ear infection looked at, and I'll ask about it then.

Home-made gatorade? Sounds interesting.

No adult lady should weigh less then 100 lbs and I think your high limit of 120 is a bit on the light side too.
Ladies can look nice well beyond that. :)

As for the exact answer to your question I have no real idea except make sure you eat healthy and enough.
Beer seems to work for me as far as weight gain is concerned but that probably isn`t healthy. :thatsright:

Well, I've had people tell me that 120 pounds is actually too much for someone of my height.  :whatever:   :bird:

Well, I'll do what I can to eat healthier, but with all the work I do, I usually don't have time to cook much.  And the school cafeteria choices don't help things (too much junk).

I don`t think 120 is too much for a lady your height.
Maybe to a gay fashion designor that likes teenage boys but to real life men....no so don`t even think about that.
I am sure there are those that could tell you what exactly to eat but since being over weight isn`t an issue I would say that you should just eat what you want at a regular interval and your body will find its own place.

Start eating avocados. They are fatty but good for you. And if you can stomach it, drink whole milk. Some people don't like its thickness but to each their own. And sister, I wish I had your problems! I need to LOSE weight. :p

I'll take some of your weight.  LOL

I just worry about my health if I lose too much, and what kind of damage it could do.   I've never been completely healthy (all sorts of infections have tried to get me) , so I need to be careful. :(

I do love whole milk, so I'll start drinking that instead of soda at lunch.

It is good that you thinking about your health. Just don't overdo it and have wonderful diabites on your hands. Pilates is good, it is all strenght training and you will get REALLY toned. I am starting that soon to lose some weight.

I just don't want anything happening because my immune system has been compromised more times than I would like (will not go into details about it).

I think my college offers free Pilates classes.  I need to look into it.

No advice here, I just about nailed a whole bag of Reese's PB cups.  :-)

I'm the same height and 120 looks heavy on me. Some people put on curves, I just seem to put on blubber.

Hey Hey Hey... no thread hijacking.  :asssmack:   Carl, you are the instigator, so therefore, you shall be punished.   :p  (even though you ARE correct)

Okay, here are my preliminary plans:

Eat 5 small meals a day during the week (and eat 3 on weekends, when my job allows).

Drink whole milk for lunch every day during the week.

Pilates or Step Aerobics

As for during the weekend, when I'm working, that's still under development.

You do NOT wanna know.

And ACC your preliminary plan sounds good I am sure the doctor or PA that you see will also give you plenty of helpful tips. Gaining unhealthy weight is easy but doing it the healthy way can be as hard as it is for some of us to lose weight.

You also mentioned something about gatorade this summer that is fine but make sure you also drink plenty of plain water too.

If you have time for weights (light weights/high reps work really well for women), muscle weighs more than fat and it makes your curves curvier.

Zone or Balance type bars (especially the higher protein ones) make good snacks and some are very tasty. I do a lot of strenuous work on my farm but find if I have a fairly high carb breakfast it helps keep my energy for several hours. I usually have a smoothie (yogurt, fruit, juice, protein powder, and silken tofu) or oatmeal and peanut butter toast. I have to do chores before I can actually sit down to eat in the morning so usually down my vitamins with a meal-replacement type drink.

I assume you're talking about last year. It cannot possibly be that hot outside right now.

As for the advice, get a physical (to rule out existing problems) and follow a common sense plan. Drink plenty of fluids, stay away from soft drinks and take multivitamins. The phosphorus in soft drinks will take nutrients away from your body (like calcium). I wouldn't do any type of "diet". Follow something that suggests lean protein, whole grains, fruits, veggies, fiber, etc...nothing that's a fad or requires you to do strange things. And a protein bar is good while you're outside and can't sit down to a meal. Just don't make them a centerpiece of your diet.

And ignore BMI charts. They do not take into account muscle mass. Your ideal weight is a bit more complex than going by your weight and height. As long as you're healthy and your organs are functioning properly, what the scale says shouldn't matter. Our nutritional needs change as we age, especially with women because of our hormones. Go see a nutritionist if you don't get satisfactory answers from the clinic.

NO, I am talking about THIS year.  When you are working outside in Savannah at a business like the one I work at, where there is a lot of CONCRETE, temperatures WILL be in excess of 100 degrees F.    It doesn't matter what the temperature is right now, because if you're out in a parking lot, things change.

I have a scheduled appointment Wednesday with the clinic (can't go today or tomorrow, due to class schedule conflicts).

Savannah is like Florida. Humidity matches the temps alot in the summer. Add in sea level and it equals you can feel gills trying to sprout during summer.
