We're renting a house in Asheville NC next week - I was curious to see if anybody had any familiarity with the area and could recommend attractions for kids aged 5-9?
Thanks.

At that age, they'd likely have a blast out at Sliding Rock (http://www.romanticasheville.com/sliding_rock.htm).
It might be a stretch, at that age, but there's always the Biltomore Estate (http://www.biltmore.com/).
Hiking and waterfall sight seeing adventures out at Chimney Rock (http://www.chimneyrockpark.com/), just carefully choose which trails you attempt.
If they're adventurous types, in downtown Asheville they have a rock climbing gym just for kids Climb Max (http://www.climbmaxnc.com/).
A short drive away is Lake Lure, which is a pretty snazzy resort lake with beaches and other activities.
Pretty much everywhere you turn there is a Gem Mine (http://www.randallglen.com/gemmine.html), even a few simple $5 buckets will likely give them a bit of fun finding an assortment of gems. It's ridiculous how common they are.
I've never been there, but there's a small quirky western themed amusement park not far away called Ghost Town in the Sky (http://www.ghosttowninthesky.com).
There's also great rivers all around for calm rafting or float-tubing during the afternoon heat. Just please use one of the outfitters, as only certain sections of the rivers are safe for it. There's just too many white water rapids and waterfalls, to go without knowing in advance where they are.

Actually, shouldn't this be moved to the Lounge?

I've heard about sliding rock, sounds like fun. The guy we're renting the house from was supposed to meet us there and give us some tips but it looks like he's now leaving before we get there.

What else are you looking to do while there?

Boone is relatively close, and it's a neat little town.

That's the point of the thread - what else is there to do?

Not much in Asheville other than a very large house and a bunch of liberals. There are probably some very good restaurants in town. The beach is a full day's drive from the mountains... that would be the first thing I'd head to in North Carolina.
The site Thor posted has links to train rides. I always liked trains when I was a child. Check it out and see where the train goes.

I was born and raised on Cape Cod - more then happy to skip the beach this go 'round. I've seen that site and found some cool things, I just though if anybody had been through the area they'd have some advice.

There's a steam train that runs out of Sylva or Bryson City on weekends....crosses the Little Tennessee river....I think you get to view Lake Fontana.... then it runs up the Nantahala valley along side the Nantahala river....you can watch the folks doing whitewater.....I used to one of those in a canoe.
There is whitewater rafting and such but the old "You must be this tall" rule comes into play for the kids.
There's the Blue Ridge Parkway for car trips....and hwy #28 from Franklin to Highlands has some of the best scenery there is....several miles of winding road with multiple waterfalls and cascading drops.....pull offs where you can let the kids play in the river....and Dry Falls right outside of highlands...kids like running back and forth under the falls.....my son always liked that area.....and Momma will like the shopping in Highlands....it's a Florida/yankee tourist trap..... Outta Highlands you can take hwy #64 by some bold, bare granite mountains on into Chimney Rock as someone else suggested.

It's just under 2 hours to drive from Asheville, to Pigeon Forge, TN.....Dollywood! It's not all that expensive, and the kids would love it. As a plus, you'd get to go through Gatlinburg. If you don't want to go to PF, there's LOTS to do in Gatlinburg...Aquarium, mini-golf out the wazoo, etc.

I live 40 miles west of Dollywood, and can be in Asheville in less than 2 hrs from my house.
There really is a ton of stuff to do with kids in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, enough that you could easily spend the night there.
Maggie Valley and Cherokee are closer to Asheville, stuff to walk around and see, and the scenery is beautiful.
The Scottish Highland Games are up on Grandfather Mountain in early August...not sure if it's next week or not....but definitely worth going to see. You need to get there early though....don't wait until afternoon to go...the food's all gone.
The farmer's market in Asheville is pretty neat...
Biltmore Village is nice too...it's outside the gates of Biltmore House. Good restaurants. There's an Episcopal Church there that was built for the workers who were building Biltmore House. It's a charming church....my son was baptized there. The kneelers are individual needlepointed cushions, each commemorating something/someone specific. (I did 2 of them....about 20 years ago).
