Any one doing the million mile garage sales next week?
Two near me. One on US 12 in Michigan and the other, 127 from Ohio to Alabama. I'm thinking about going out on Thursday, hit the open ones and go as far as I can. Stop and spend the night and then hit the ones that opened up on Friday on the way back.
I'm pumped up as I've scored pretty well in the last 2 weeks. Two 50's pole lamps with fiberglass shades for $6.50 each and a nice hanging Hull planter for 50 cents, to name just a few. I'm in a new mall that is very large and not of real high quality. Been selling cheap and it is going out as fast as i put it in. I have been out of it for 3 or 4 years when stuff stopped selling. I hope the market for lower end items is returning.
The vindictive primitive who, besides going about garage-saleing, is still looking for a third-world country with beaches and free medical care for all, so as get her hips replaced:

1. Not going and not having much luck at garage sales this year overall.
I thought, given the lousy economy, there would be lots of sales and lots of bargains but it's one of the worst years I've had "on the hunt." My group shop booths are doing okay, though. Not getting rich, but about average for this time of year. Maybe the lack of sales is a good thing because I'm forced to clean out the stockpile once and for all.

3. the stockpile
I'm moving this week and geez did I find out that I have too much stock! Tens of thousands of pieces of sheet music, for one thing. Gah.

4. One of two things I would love to do but probably never will.
The other is Brimfield. Through the years when we were in business, my husband would never go to Brim. Since we were very specific in what we bought, his thought was that we were better off on the road every day(one of us). Sunday and Monday, we'd both go.
Those were that days when there were pickers galore and plenty of wholesale dealers. House calls were good then too.
I can imagine that the garage sale would be a hoot. My daughter in the midwest says she will do it when her kids get a little older. She is in Indiana and I guess the beginning is not too far away. If she ever does, I'll fly out and join her if I am able. Bring good, well worn shoes and plenty of cash.
I'm trying to get the courage to drive to Indy again. There are so many great Antiques malls along the route. We used to follow all the signs along Rt 70 and had a ball. Got some good buys and great things for everyone as gifts.
Now that my husband is gone, I'm afraid to do the trip alone.

5. if we weren't on opposite sides of the country, we could partner up
I would like nothing more than to learn from someone who knows other areas of expertise. That's how I learned the paper trade, by following a friend who has been a dealer for 35 years through the shops and auctions of Western Massachusetts and other parts of New England.
Maybe there is someone out there who needs a mentor and would like to go together with you.
I've been to Brimfield a couple of times. I didn't buy much, but I sure saw some unforgettable things. One was a small spool occasional table. Covered with wooden thread spools, painted green. I never forgot that. Also remarkable were old chairs with colorful seats made from woven men's neckties. That was a hoot.

California is going to become flyover country....you know.....like if you leave from the right airport you might flyover it on your way to Alaska.

The "paper trade", whatever that is, must not be very profitable.
