I would like to point out that I've never seen a single person banned on DU for homophobia

I've seen some pretty homophobic shit on DU, but this one really has to take the cake (On why the GLBT rights shouldn't be important this election):
"But in light of the larger scheme of things STFU, there are bigger issues than what you do with your genitals right now."
I've seen comments like how Obama was 100% right to embrace Donnie McClurkin, because "The gays are going for Hillary anyways" (The comment was not deleted for 3 days) This poster is still a GDP regular.
One of my earliest DU memories, was of being told "No, gays should not have the right to marry. If that makes me a freeper, so be it." Banned? Suspended? Nope.
Why aren't these posters ever banned? Go in to the "Best Of DU, GLBT edition" thread and look up every homophobic comment on DU, almost none of the homophobes have been tombed. If they have, it probably wasn't for the homophobic comments they made, most of which haven't even been deleted.
DU has a terrible, terrible track record when it comes to tombing obvious homophobic trolls. And would the mod who will (probably) end up locking this thread with the comment "If you see offensive material then hit the alert button," care to explain why the alert button didn't, for example, get This (Of COURSE gays can change!) or This (Stop spanking me... thats gay!) deleted, at the very least?

They've never seen it because they don't count the bashing of people like Tammy Bruce and the Log Cabin Republicans as "homophobia".

Why should anyone get banned for that? I had no idea there were some normal people at the DUmp.

I don't see what's wrong with that statement.

Frankly, I think the homosexual agenda people in the USA overplayed their hand out of arrogance and social stupidity. I don't see them going away, but I do think we are beginning to see some welcomed backlash to the disgusting idea that homosexuals deserve special rights especially designed for their odd and abnormal genitalia desires.
I love broccoli. I want my bank to print checks with broccoli on them. <<<< I know that was the other thread, but it is a good example of the narcissistic self-centered crap of which the nation is growing tired.

Ditto.
I don't see anything wrong with that statement either; it's simply a statement of fact.
Issues and concerns come and go, waver back and forth, over time, and right now this gay thing isn't one of the big ones.
I mean, usually decent and civilized people consider other things, such as the war against terror, taxes, education, the environment, &c., &c., &c., as somewhat, uh, more important.

Did the Pink Jackboot Brigade leave DU or something? Yes, I've seen a couple people given a granite sandwich over shit they've said about gays that basically came down to "we don't want gays to marry", so they got the boot.

2. Anti-gay sentiments and homophobia should be a zero-tolerance issue.
I agree. There is absolutely no room for accepting discriminatory speech here.
Unless you're talking about Christians or white males. Then pretty much anything goes, right?

3. Zero-tolerance rarely works on something like this
The sad fact is that GLBT awareness is about where race relations were in the 60s (or worse, given that we still have the 'Jim Crow' anti-gay marriage laws). I've seen many good but ignorant DUers turn around quickly after getting a verbal ass-kicking for their insensitive comments.
However, I do heartily agree that anyone who makes a habit of homophobic comments should be TS'd out of here.
Did they really "turn around", or did they just stop saying what they believe in order to keep the peace? That's the problem with speech codes. They settle nothing and serve only to stifle the free exchange of ideas. You'd get much further by actually discussing why people say this or that or why they have a particular attitude or opinion on a subject. Instead you want to just shut it down and sweep it under the rug. Is it because it might bring out some uncomfortable truths about homosexual activists' agendas, or because it may illustrate that things like bigotry and racism are rampant on the so-called "tolerant left"?

If they TS'd everyone who said anything homophobic, there wouldn't be anyone left! Those people can find something offensive in the most innocent remarks!!

I dislike gay Mexicans...... :loser:
