Pete Rose is easily the greatest athlete of my lifetime. I saw him dozens of times at Crosley Field and Riverfront, plus hundreds of games on TV and radio. Almost every time I was at the stadium, he would do something in the game that would make you shake your head and say that was worth the price of admission. Whether it was taking an extra base, throwing behind a runner, doing something through sheer hustle that you did not think possible. He could never have fixed a game, because he could not play any other way than 100%. He was from another generation. I remember an interview he did with Waite Hoyt, when he said his dream was to be the first singles hitter to make $100,000.
Anyway, people have a strong argument that he should be barred from the Hall of Fame due to the gambling controversy. I would say that if that's true, then not one player from the past thirty years should be inducted, because every single one of them is very likely to have accumulated his stats on the strength of steroids, bennies, and HGH.

I agree with you. He totally got shafted, especially considering what today's prima donas are getting away with!

The sticking point, as I see it, is that Rose will not admit that he was betting on games. He would need to do that, and also agree to never take another managing job again. Hell, I'd expand that to include any managing or coaching job in any level of baseball.

Why was Pete Rose even kicked out for gambling? There are atheletes who have done much worse than he did. Most people banned from Major League Baseball were for gambling.

Everyone involved in the Black Sox scandal of 1919 are banned and should be banned forever. **** Joe Jackson and his whiny sympathetic revisionist history backers. He took money from gamblers. Yes, he hit for a nice average and drove in runs in the World Series, but if you examine when he did it, his "production" was almost always after the game was already lost or the White Sox were way ahead.
There is no evidence that Peter Edward Rose bet on his own team. That's the cardinal sin of baseball. That he gambled period is troubling, but it shouldn't keep his accomplishments from being recognized by the HOF.
