I am inspired by the horrible list that Mensa put out and am thinking it would be fun to have a CC list of the best TV shows of all time. But I think we are a diverse enough group that probably there would be no consensus in our views so just list your five all time favorites. I'll start:
Twin Peaks
(http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/maplebob/twin_peaks_3article.jpg)
The Prisoner
(http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/maplebob/prisoner02.jpg)
Nowhere Man
(http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/maplebob/nowhere-man.jpg)
Babylon 5
(http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/maplebob/Babylon_5_cast.jpg)
Doctor Who
(http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/maplebob/doctorwho.jpg)
-
My list in no particular order:
Xfiles
MacGyver
Star Trek
Monty Python's Flying Circus
-
"The Ed Sullivan Show" is probably the most important entertainment program that's been on TV so far, and it's been gone 38 years.
-
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Angel
Firefly
House
Lost
24
This is all IMHO
-
Captain Kangaroo
-
I almost forgot .... Lancelot Link
-
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Firefly
House
Supernatural
MacGyver

The Beverly Hillbillys
Married With Children

Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Firefly
House
Supernatural
MacGyver
You didn't like Angel?
That show made me fall asleep. Besides, I became a Spike/Buffy fanatic, so good riddance to that other vampire. :p

I Love Lucy
I Dream of Jeanie
South Park

Oh. My. God.
That was by far the hottest love scene EVER on TV. *drool*
*goes take a cold shower*
I wish the scene existed in it's entirety on YouTube. The video I found cuts off just before the...uh...climax.
I am making sexual puns now. :o People on the internet have been a bad influence on me! :hammer:
-
How could I forget Happy Days!!!!!? :thatsright:
-
Taking into consideration when and where some things were made, here's the first ten that come to my mind in no particular order:
Black Adder
Star Trek
Steve Canyon
Futurama
Red Dwarf
The Red Green Show
Monty Python
Absolutely Fabulous
The Twilight Zone
WKRP
Lancelot Link wasn't very smart but it was funny as Hell. If we were going for 'Snappy repartee' like that one icky item on the Mensa list, MXC would've been on it.

I thought Frasier was really good, too.

Why not, the Mensa people did.
I like when I used to catch old Match Games on the Game Channel. Gene Rayburn was genius!
-
My list in no particular order:
Xfiles
MacGyver
Star Trek
Monty Python's Flying Circus
Monty Python is great.
X-Files, I've seen every episode while it aired but never really have revistited it. And I was overseas when MacGyver was on so I never really saw it except for one TV movie I think where they go looking for the gold of the Incas and it turns out to be corn. Which David Lynch later used in Twin Peaks as cream corn.
One show I didn't list and I haven't seen all of them yet but it is Jeeves and Wooster starting Doctor House. One show was about newts and it was particularly funny, which is why I bought the DVD's of the series but haven't watched them yet. Oh yeah, House was in Black Adder too which some people have listed.
-
"The Ed Sullivan Show" is probably the most important entertainment program that's been on TV so far, and it's been gone 38 years.
I have never seen the Ed Sullivan show except for clips. Maybe one day they'll have a Best Of compilation on DVD.
There was a while when they were showing The Show of Shows I think it was called and I highly enjoyed that which reminds me of The Honeymooners, which should have made my list.
-
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Angel
Firefly
House
Lost
24
This is all IMHO
Firefly was great. It was so sad that Fox seemed determined to kill that show off right from the start. I love Serenity. It's amazing they were able to make that.
At the time, though, I just decided to enjoy as many as Fox would show. Whenever I start watching a show on Fox, I just assume it will be dead after 3 episodes. Sarah Conner seems to be doing good, though.
-
The A Team
The Six Million Dollar Man
WKRP in Cincinnati
The Beverly Hillbillys
Married With Children
The A Team was great. So 1980's!
And I never missed an episode of The Six Million Dollar Man when I was a kid. I used to wear my fancy Grrranimals and pretend to be Steve Austin and run in slow motion.
The best episodes I remember is the bigfoot one. I thought that red haired alien was hot. It really made me want to move to California and live in the SA fault.
-
Space: Above And Beyond
-
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Firefly
House
Supernatural
MacGyver
You didn't like Angel?
That show made me fall asleep. Besides, I became a Spike/Buffy fanatic, so good riddance to that other vampire. :p
I always thought Charisma Carpenter was hot and I stopped watching Buffy after she left but somehow never seen an episode of Angel. I think about that time, I was just tired of vampires in general.
I mean, except for Dracula: Bus of the Undead, they never do anything. But then I watched Blade the other day and thought that was a pretty good vampire movie.
-
Dexter
The Sopranos until the end when I just wanted every freaking one of them to die a horrid death
The Shield
I Love Lucy
I Dream of Jeanie
South Park
The A Team
The Price Is Right
Jeopardy
Firefly
X Files
Sesame Street
MASH
All In The Family
Full House
Ninja Warrior
Dexter is really one of the best shows on cable right now. I didn't think they would be able to sustain it.
That reminds me, I really loved Rome and the Tudors is great too.
-
We're two pages into this thread, and nobody's mentioned Cheers and Seinfeld. I'm disappointed. :hammer:
I thnk I caught every episode of Cheers when it came on Nick at Nite a few years ago and honestly, I can't see what the hype was about. Well, I really liked the early seasons with Coach and Diane but the show seemed so stale when that other lady came.
I'm one of the few people in America who hasn't seen more than a few minutes of Seinfeld.

I see no one has given it up for Welcome Back Kotter or Three's Company :p
A lot of my favorites have been mentioned already.
Hmmm....
Sesame Street
Dukes of Hazzard
Brady Bunch
I Love Lucy
The Dick Van Dyke Show
The Twilight Zone
The Sopranos (the entire last season was traumatic for me, just because it was the last season...and with their final episode, am hoping there is a movie since they left it WAO for one)
Alice
Family Ties
Beverly Hills 90210 :p
Carnivale
Rome
*Got The Waltons for Christmas, and got Northern Exposure for my birthday :-)
Plan on one day watching Twin Peaks in its entirety from beginning to end, as one of my very best friends in HS religiously watched that show.
Oh, and am currently thrilled with The Tudors and The Riches.
That is all.

Monty Pythons flying Circus

Jackie Gleason :p

Highway To Heaven
Touched By An Angel

I agree "Cheers" has not stood the test of time, which is the real test of a great show. "Roseanne" is another show the powers that be thought would be a classic, but it too has not aged well. It is more about the "feel" of a show than the actual content. Both "Cheers" and "Roseanne" seem cocky and too self-important, which comes off as quaint and stale now that they haven't been on the air in years.
OTOH, I watched an episode of "Seinfeld" today, the first one in a long time, and laughed out loud. It amazes me how "Seinfeld" can have four different stories going on in one 22-minute show and have it remain rational (per se).

"Sullivan" was out on VHS, so I can't help but think DVDs are out there too.
Anyone who was anybody crossed the Ed Sullivan stage at one time or the other. That's what made it important. Ed even gave rock'n roll a sense of legitimacy, being the first show to feature some of the acts like The Doors, Beatles, Stones, Airplane, etc. It was all live and it was a television miracle.

Twin Peaks just came out in this great gold box edition with all the eps and both the TV movie and the international movie version. One of my favorite shows of all time. I've been watching it now for about a week. There's supposed to be all kinds of other extras for us Peaks Freaks too.
Carnivale was good too but I haven't seen the whole thing, just most of the second season, I guess.

I used to really like watching Grizzley Adams as a kid. I think we went to see the original movie in the theaters when it first came out.
One show I didn't see until years after it first aired that I liked a lot was Rawhide.

Space 1999
(http://www.televisionheaven.co.uk/space1999.jpg)
I loved Space: 1999 when I was a kid. I wanted to be on the moon when it got launched into space. What was it? Sept. 13, 1999?
I also loved UFO by Gerry and Silvia Anderson:
I rented the DVD's when it came out and it runs on Dish TV's Voom Family Channel sometiems and I think UFO holds up well. Even better than Space: 1999
-
When I was a kid I had the toy version of the Space 1999 ship The Eagle.
-
When I was a kid I had the toy version of the Space 1999 ship The Eagle.
Me too. And the squirt gun.
I really wanted the walkie talkies, my friend got those and I was so jealous!
But the Eagles were cool. I always wondered how they made more when one would blow up.

Man, I hated Rat Patrol...I had actually read about the war in North Africa by then and so was not able to achieve that "Willing suspension of disbelief" for it. Unlike "Combat," which I thought was cool at the time but I realized doesn't stand up at all now, having seen some episodes on one of the retro cable channels a couple of years ago.

Space 1999

My brother had that ship in the picture. Since he doesn't have any kids my son got it. Not being one for giving a doody about antiques, or coolness factor he crash landed it about 1000 times in my back yard last summer. It is still basically in one piece though, kinda sorta.
-
My list in no particular order:
Quantum Leap (and how come nobody mention THAT yet?)
Star Trek
Star Trek TNG (all other ST spinoffs suck)
Scrubs
South Park
Night Court
Chapelle's Show (I'm RICK JAMES, bitch!)
Rome (although historically bullshit)
Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom (with Marlon Perkins)
Battlestar Galactica (the new one, actually)
Dick van Dyke Show
Law and Order (before it got preachy...SVU is okay, but CI sucks)
Arrested Development
Hogan's Heroes (now I'm showing MY age)
24
Bob Newhart Show (BOTH versions--especially the latter one which IIRC was just "Newhart")
Bonanza
THE TWILIGHT ZONE

We used to watch Little House all the time as a kid. It also had one of the scarriest things I'd ever seen on TV when Laura dreamed of Mrs Olson's head on platter for a Halloween episode. Now that's good TV!

Haven't read through the thread, but I'd have to put my number one as "The Carol Burnett Show"....LOVED it!
One of my earliest memories of a skit is from the Carol Burnett Show, I think. It's a take off of the old Imperial Margerine commercials where someone would bite into some bread with the margerine spread on it and suddenly be wearing a crown but in this skit, after the guy gets the crown, some people dressed as peasents come in and murder him claiming he's a tyrant and proclaim someone else the king.
-

They are Christian conservatives, and that why I think that full-frontal candid nude photo of Kirk on the internet is a travesty. It was taken in a gym somewhere, apparently by someone who doesn't respect him.

They are Christian conservatives, and that why I think that full-frontal candid nude photo of Kirk on the internet is a travesty. It was taken in a gym somewhere, apparently by someone who doesn't respect him.
Huh? I don't recall that.
I made it up. I wanted to get you Kirk groupies a-googlin'. :lmao:
Of course. ::) :hammer:

Family Guy already did something about Bugs Bunny. Someone edited to look like a real WB cartoon on YouTube called Bugs Bunny in the Real World, so take that as a warning for the squeemish even of cartoons:
