WASHINGTON (AP) - A chaotic scene unfolded near the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday after police shot and killed an armed man in what authorities described as a routine rush hour traffic stop that turned deadly.

U.S. Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Schneider said the unidentified 35-year-old man refused to stop at the checkpoint about two blocks north of the Capitol complex. The man drove the wrong way down a street and struck two officers with his car—one on foot and the other on a motorcycle, Schneider said. The two officers received minor injuries.

Police opened fire after the man brandished a handgun and refused to put it down, said Schneider, who described the melee as "very fast moving, very fluid."

"The officers felt they were being threatened—they were in fear for their lives," Schneider said.

She did not know if the man fired at police first. District of Columbia Fire Department spokesman Pete Piringer said the man was being taken to a hospital. It was not clear where he died.

The late afternoon scare occurred as lawmakers were wrapping up a third day of hearings for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor. Police briefly sealed off part of the Capitol as a precaution, but the buildings were reopened about a half hour later. Authorities said the shooting was not related to the Capitol complex.

"We hear pop, pop, pop, like a gun," said Carol Lanigan, of Toledo, Ohio, describing how she saw a white car come flying down the street with two police cars behind chasing it.

She said she heard about four or five shots.

I wonder if the guy thought, in his heart of hearts, that he would be having dinner at home tonight after he got through with his "business"?

Personally, I think the guy was trying to kill himself. You have to be suicidal to wave a gun around DC cops that have NO sense of humor anywhere the Capitol building.

It wasn't just the D.C. cops...the Capitol building has it's own police force.

Chief Lanier of the D.C. police has her hands full with crime in the District.  One neighborhood is so bad that there is a military style traffic control point at the entrance to the area.  Some people tried to cry foul on it but a judge upheld the action as legit.

It's extremely confusing trying to figure out who has jurisdiction and where in D.C.

You've got the D.C. Cops...Capitol Police....Pentagon Police...the regular old Military Police (from four different branches of service no less!)...Park Service Police...DLA Police...NSA Police....etc etc  and that's not counting the protective services for people like Gen. Casey and SecDef Gates as well as the uniformed Secret Service Cops.

I'd reather explain the Theory of Relativity to my 11 y/o son than figure out who has jurisdiction and were in the District.

Given time, I'm sure that 0Bama will have his brownshirts, along with NOI members, providing security around the White House.  By "around the White House", I mean in the US.

Except that model is +/- 10 years old and therefore much much less, and very desirable to certain unnamed inner city groups.

Why aren't there any stories at the DUmp about an obviously race-motivated freeper attack on the White House ? As a matter of fact, I don't see any stories at all on their latest page about this.....

Turns out the car was stolen, and the driver had "a lengthy record of arrests and was carrying a weapon known as a MAC-11."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/16/AR2009071602888.html

Sounds like any other day in any big city.

Sounds about right, never a good idea to come out shooting. I do wonder about this paragraph from the link:

Quote

The D.C. police official who described White's weapon said investigators found no record of outstanding warrants for White's arrest. The official also said the Mercedes was not a stolen vehicle. As for why White did not stop for police, the official said he might have been worried that officers would discover the MAC-11 in his car.

Dumb move with fatal results.
