Oh my.

Grandma, who's actually younger than most of the primitives in the cooking and baking forum; she just looks older, but she isn't:

I found a really good product this week at Whole Foods. I had to have a colonoscopy yesterday and could only have liquids on Thursday. So I picked up some chicken broth. They had organic chicken broth in a three pack of tetra pack boxes for only $1.99. Each individual box is only 8.45 oz which is a good size for me. Only cooking for two I sometimes waste about half of a large container of chicken broth when I need just a little for something and then don't need it for anything else. I put it in the fridge thinking I'll use it soon and there it sits. Yes, I know I could freeze it but for some reason it never ends up that way.

Like tonight, I just snapped a bunch of green beans from the garden for our dinner. I cubed a little bit of a ham steak and browned it in the pan and then used a little of the broth to deglaze the pan before adding the beans. After streaming the beans for a little while in that little bit of liquid with the ham, I added the rest of the of broth with my seasonings and have them cooking the rest of the way now. It smells really, really good.

I thought it was a pretty good idea since it came in portions I can actually use.

Edited to add it's their 365 store brand.

1. I usually hate overpackaging but I use the individual chicken broth servings and have done so for some time now. It makes more sense to pay for a little additional packaging than it does to toss half a box of broth a week.

2. I feel that way, too.

I would gladly pay a little more for smaller portions of some things. It was more of an issue when I was single and didn't cook much at all than it is now but there are still some things I only need a little of and I only have so much freezer space.

Grandma and her husband live out in the country, somewhere around the Texas-Oklahoma-Arkansas border.  They like to pretend like they're living the rustic bucolic life as it was in the olden days.

But one suspects Abe and Mary in their log cabin, or Sadie and Joe in their sod house, didn't have electrical freezers.

The penquin primitive, who shows a lack of respect to her better, the Rita Hayworth primitive, the "Tangerine LaBamba" primitive:

Oh my, hippywife. I have missed you. No wonder you didn't post so much lately!

I hope you get well quickly!

A family member had similar, then surgury, then reverse surgery and now feels better than ever. Hope you can feel that good, as well!

4. No, no!

Sweetie, I had a colonoscopy, not a colostomy. They were just checking things out to see why I was bleeding. It was only due to my diverticulitis and is very easily remedied, everything else is fine.

5. Whew!

Glad to hear that bit of info - I mis-read. Even so, I had that same test years ago and that's no picnic in the park.

I just recall getting very drugged up but still conscious while they used a hose longer than my whole self is tall. Quite unpleasant. Hope they make it a bit better these days.

Best wishes to you feeling better!

For the record, in case anyone's interested, the Rita Hayworth primitive is under the weather at the moment.  One wishes her a speedy recovery, and one is sincere in saying that.

You'll crack green beans by hand but your too lazy to put some broth in a freezer?
