Obama Names Alabama Family Doctor as New Surgeon General
Dr. Regina Benjamin Rebuilt Rural Health Clinic After Hurricane Katrina
By JAKE TAPPER, KAREN TRAVERS and SUNLEN MILLER
July 13, 2009

President Barack Obama named Dr. Regina Benjamin as U.S. Surgeon General in an announcement late this morning at the White House.

Dr. Regina Benjamin became nationally known for her determination to rebuild a rural health clinic in Bayou La Batre, Ala., after it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. She is the first African American woman to head a state medical society and received a MacArthur Foundation "genius grant" last year.

She was the first African–American woman to head a state medical society and received a MacArthur Foundation "genius grant" last year.

Benjamin, who must be confirmed by the Senate, became known nationally for her determination to rebuild her clinic, destroyed by Hurricane Georges in 1998 and again by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

"For nearly two decades Dr. Regina Benjamin has seen, in a very personal way, what is broken about our health care system," Obama said today, introducing his pick in the Rose Garden. "She's seen an increasing number of patients who have had health insurance their entire lives suddenly lose it because they lost their jobs or because it's simply become too expensive."

Watch "World News With Charles Gibson" tonight at 6:30 ET for the full report.

Benjamin enters the fray as the debate over health care escalates in Washington, D.C.

"We are now closer to the goal of health care reform than we have ever been," Obama said today, but also adding, "Even though we are close, I've got no illusions that it's going to be easy to get over the finish line."

Bayou La Batre......wasn't that featured in Forest Gump?  Anyway, it seems to me that this woman's experience prescribing antibiotics, vitamins and salve for scraped knees might not serve us very well........but what the heck do I know.

I don't believe that the country has recovered from the last female African-American to hold that office.......

Kinda reminded me of Cynthia McKinney with a medical degree,,,,,,,,

Boy, I guess that's true Johnny.  Rush was saying today that she doesn't believe doctors should make profits.  However, she doesn't look to be starving to death.  The DUmmies should love that.

That doctor in Alabama looks incompetent enough, she ought to fit right in.

I'd argue too many people DO remember Elders - I'll never forget the way she pronounced "maaaaa-STER-base-shin" and Eric Clapner, of course.

To pay for college, she turned to the National Health Service Corps, which gave her tuition reimbursement in exchange for committing to work in areas where there was a shortage of doctors. That agreement took her to Bayou La Batre, where she was the only doctor for 2,500 people, most of whom lived below the poverty line and spoke no English.
2500 people in AL and no one spoke English? Riiiight.....

Maybe she's saying they spoke French or Creole. ....to which I also say bullshit. You can go to some of the most remote and swampiest places in Louisiana and even if they do speak creole, they still speak enough English to carry a conversation. Methinks this affirmative action hire is embellishing.....quite a bit.

Vietnamese is also a possibility.  Remember, a lot of the Vietnamese community settled in the Gulf Coast region.

ETA: Damn, am I good or what?

Nice work.

Now my question is, does Dr. Regina Benjamin actually speak Vietnamese, or did they just decide to stick her an area with an English problem for the heck of it?  I would assume that if non-fluency was really such a huge issue in the region, they would have tried to actively recruit somebody who speaks Vietnamese.
