Pool Boots Kids Who Might "Change the Complexion"

More than 60 campers from Northeast Philadelphia were turned away from a private swim club and left to wonder if their race was the reason.
"I heard this lady, she was like, 'Uh, what are all these black kids doing here?' She's like, 'I'm scared they might do something to my child,'" said camper Dymire Baylor.
The Creative Steps Day Camp paid more than $1900 to The Valley Swim Club. The Valley Swim Club is a private club that advertises open membership. But the campers' first visit to the pool suggested otherwise.
"When the minority children got in the pool all of the Caucasian children immediately exited the pool," Horace Gibson, parent of a day camp child, wrote in an email. "The pool attendants came and told the black children that they did not allow minorities in the club and needed the children to leave immediately."

Wow, who would have guessed that there would be overt racism in a town that's 4/5 Dim? ::) ::) ::)

The City of Brotherly Love is a VERY class-conscious place, and working-class Blacks are pretty much in last place there. You could honestly say that this was more about their socio-economic class than about race, but it would be a cop-out because the two are inextricably linked there.

Either way, it's wrong in the extreme. This is one case where I'd say blacks have a very legit reason to be angry, and the kids have done nothing. Nice way to perpetuate the cycle, Philly.

Though they wouldn't dare admit it, probably more so than they accuse the South of being. The one state in the union where the Klan had the strongest hold in the 20th century, for example, wasn't Mississippi, either of the Carolinas, or anywhere else in the south. It was Indiana.

We lost a nice park due to a black invasion. Among some of the things there was an Olympic pool and diving tower. They couldn't control the kids or the e-coli.... sooooo they shut it down and dynamited everything before they were overwhelmed with lawsuits.

Well.....I have a problem with this on a couple of levels......first, I think that it is perfectly OK for a group to form a private club, in order to exclude any group or individual that they desire, so long as it is done with their own funds.
That said.....the OP article states that the camp paid the club 1900 dollars for access for their campers.......in my opinion, the acceptance of the fee would abrigate their closed membership provision, at least for so long as the agreement lasts.......

Well.....I have a problem with this on a couple of levels......first, I think that it is perfectly OK for a group to form a private club, in order to exclude any group or individual that they desire, so long as it is done with their own funds.

The park I'm referring to was company owned. It was open to employees and their guest. It was a nice place but cheap due to company sponsorship...... things got way out of hand. People would come in droves and dump umpteen kids at the pool and tell them to lie about being able to swim....and in general, just let them run wild. The company really had no choice but shut it down. If they excluded blacks...lawsuit. If they opened it as a private club....lawsuit. If they sold it and it reopened as a private club....lawsuit. So about the only option they had was to close it and destroy it.
Yeah, they should have known who they were dealing with when they rented the facility out.....live and learn.

I'm having difficulty understanding how this happened, unless the facility was built on government owned/leased land..........If the company park was located on private property, just put up a fence, and don;t let anyone in that doesn't have the right credentials, as employees or guests.........anyone else is trespassing, and can/should be arrested/prosecuted as such. Regardless of the racial problems in this country, you are free to exclude anyone from private property so long as it is properly "posted" (required here in Missouri).....no lawsuits......Oh, I guess they can try, but it should be fruitless.
Around here, trespassers can be shot........and frequently are.........

They were employees, black empolyees.....but they would bring half the nieghborhood with them as guest....they over ran the place. If the company tried to control things...they were racist, discriminated against blacks, etc., etc..... no option left but to shut it down.
The city owned pools had to be shut down and filled in for the same reasons.
