Title: Skin's effectively kills all negative Dear Leader posts

We are introducing a new DU feature that people have been requesting for a long time.

We have finally upgraded the DU Recommend function to allow people to "Unrecommend" as well.

Why Are We Adding This Functionality?

If you have spent any time on DU, you have probably noticed that under our old system -- which only permitted positive recommendations -- there was a tendency for highly polarizing topics to climb to the top of the Greatest Page. We believe that giving members the option to unrecommend topics will help insure that the threads at the top of the Greatest Page are those threads that have the broadest appeal to our members.

We do not expect that this will be a huge change for DU. But we do hope that it will put a little more emphasis on the topics that unite us, instead of those that divide us. Of course, you are still free to post discussion threads on highly polarizing topics. You just won't get the positive reinforcement of seeing them at the top of the Greatest Page.

How It Works

If you look in the bottom left corner of any discussion thread, you should see this:

(con't)

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x6021143

Now the cult followers can gang up and kill any thread which even hints that Dear Leader is less than flawless.

Oh my.

This'll go over about as well as when my fellow alum Skins tried that "ignore" thingamajig a little over a year ago (not the current "ignore" thing, something entirely different).

In other words, it's not going to go over at all.

Primitives don't like change.

Oh yes, the superblock. Oooooh, what fun that was. They were clamoring for that back then, and when they got it, it turned out to be a fiasco. Much like this is likely to be. Much like the entire Obama administration already is.

I wonder if they have some way of seeing who "recs" and "unrecs" every thread.   That could be used as another "mole trap".

I think Skins is jealous of the Kos Kids. He's certainly trying to copy them.

Absolutely.

They also tried a "rate-a-thread" thing very briefly.  There were five possible ways to vote for a thread. $kimmer trashed that idea pretty quickly.

ON EDIT: We have decided to remove the total number of votes, and only show the net score. It was apparent that showing the total number of votes was confusing to readers. It made it appear that you could simply subtract the net score from the total votes to get the number of unrecommendations, which was NOT correct. I apologize for the confusion.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

DUmmies confused? Go figure!

202. Bad. ****ing. Idea!
Great. The tyranny of the majority in action. Get enough of "yes-men" sycophants to remove something off of the Greatest.

Tell you what, why don't you allow recommends in the Israel and 9/11 forums? Or is that just a tad too democratic for this Underground?

160. I wish this feature was not added.
 Take your thread

"Recommend +54 (150 votes) Unrecommend"

Does this mean that 96 people do not recommend your thread, vote against it?

People can use this to be cruel.

Unrecommend is good to keep nonsense off the front page but being able to see the totals of "<0" is not conducive to community harmony. IMHO, things will be better if you just leave it as "0" in the recommend column and delete the total number of votes.

The superblock?  Can someone refresh my memory?

I do remember when they made ignore lists public.  That was fun to watch.

If I remember right (can't remember all of the specific details), if you had someone on superblock, not only will you not see their posts, but they couldn't even post in (or possibly even read) one of your threads. The public lists was part of it.

Irony Alert.

Describe democracy as the "tyranny of the majority in action", and then complain about not having enough of it.

Wow.

I predicted this would fall apart.

I made the prediction circa 12:45 p.m. today.

I had no idea it would begin falling apart within 6 hours.

I thought a couple of days, a week, or something.

With all of the tender, fragile feelings that reside in the DUmp, you'd never see another post, for all of this :catfight: :gay: :catfight: :gay: going on...

Every time he tries to do something like this, it fails miserably.  The DUmmies truly don't like change.

The purpose of "unrecommend" is a mole trap. I would never use it.

They should have named the unrecommend feature as "fling feces" because thats how its going to be used.

Don't like the topic ? fling feces.
Don't like the poster ? fling feces.
Want to impress your primitive friends ? fling feces.
Thread is higher ranked than yours ? fling feces.

Etc etc etc.
