A Microsoft researcher has claimed that MySpace has become a “digital ghetto,†after white people abandoned it in favour of the more elite-seeming, culturally-superior Facebook.
Speaking at a conference in New York, Danah Boyd described the flight from MySpace to Facebook, claiming that the people who made the move are more likely to be educated, white and privileged:
The fact that digital migration is revealing the same social patterns as urban white flight should send warning signals to all of us… It should scare the hell out of us… When people are structurally divided, they do not share space with one another, they do not communicate with one another; this canon does breed intolerance.
Apparently, Facebookers mock MySpace users, saying only idiots would stick with the site, that it’s full of stupid people, Boyd said, after four years of research.
Is she nuts? No one left MySpace because of their upbringing — the site has always been more of a music network, hence the urban (to Boyd, ghetto) users. Anyone who abandoned MySpace likely did so because Facebook is simply better — it’s easier to use, has better features, and easier on the eyes, too. It’s bothered to innovate, and was one of the leaders in the whole app store revolution, too.
And, MySpace is still widely used — in the US it’s the top social network. That’s where social networking started, and MySpace started it all. But then it was usurped globally by Facebook, which added users who had never even touched MySpace.

Why does it have to be racism just because groups that share similar ideals, beliefs and possibly skin color , want to be with others like them. Race has never been an issue when discussing politics or sports on most boards that I've been on.

Asinine all I can say. Facebook is a lot less cluttered than MySpace.

^ 5 ...... oh yeah.
I agree.
I never had a myspace acct. but I have a facebook acct. I just felt like myspace was more for 'kids'. Facebook seems a little more 'mature'.

Assume for a moment that the premise is correct - then the conclusion above is also correct but I say for the exact opposite reason; we should be scared that a large percentage of people in the U.S. are so far gone as to cause the exodus described. The people leaving myspace aren't the problem it is the people that are causing us (and yes I switched from myspace to facebook) to leave that are the real problem.

Agreed. Although the games and thingies that get passed around become a little annoying. I just don't care all that much about what kind of dog I'd be, yunno?

No. Those dogs don't even shed. That's just outrageous.

Yeah, I pass on most that stuff. I think most folks understand when you ignore what they send you. At least I don't have to wade through pages of neon colored text.

I bit the bullet and got a Facebook account the other day, after ridiculing anyone who used it since it's been around. I immediately connected with almost my entire graduating class, my buddy from Basic, and many other people I've met over the years.

Ditto. I was blown away by how many people are on fb. I never did the MySpace thing, so I have no basis of comparison there.
I get on fb maybe a couple times a week and I'm shocked by how much "stuff" that goes on. It looks like it can become very addictive.

Funny how people like to throw around the "racism" word, as if it's some mortal sin. Racism has been around since people discovered that there were other tribes. All in all, I prefer Facebook to mySpace for reasons that Texacon stated.

Some people have so much "flash" and other crap running on their MySpace page that they load slow even with cable. :hammer:
