You don't have to get the 3GS for tethering. I just did this, disabling my wireless on my laptop, and it works like a charm. Gonna be great when I'm on the road.

I just listened to the first few minutes. It allows you to access the internet for a laptop through the iPhones internet connection. I would wonder about the air-time usage doing something like that.

You have to have an unlimited data plan with an iphone so it wouldn't cost any more than your monthly fee.

Are you having any conflicts with visual voicemail or text messaging, since you've quasi-hacked open the tethering features? It's been reported on a few sites, that unlocking it through a few of the ways discovered, garbles texts and disables visual voicemail.
I haven't tried it myself yet.
