Los Angles sales tax raised to 9.75% today
A new half-cent sales tax to build transportation projects in Los Angeles County goes into effect today, raising the county's rate to 9.75%. But the measure passed by voters in November might generate about $1.8 billion less than originally estimated.
Officials for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority said that the worst recession since World War II would probably reduce the revenue collected under Measure R from about $40 billion to roughly $38.2 billion during the next 30 years.

Combine that with a 10% marginal income tax and 1.25% marginal property tax and we are being crushed by our state tax burden. DUers who call California a "anti-tax" state simply don't know what they are talking about.

Interesting. Californians are paying the same sales tax as here in Tennessee.
Of course, our real estate tax is much lower, our state income tax is zero, and our city income tax is zero.
But Californians get sooo many more valuable government services. Oh, wait, California is going belly up.
Kind of makes you wonder where all that money is going.
AIDS clinics, recycling, and Mexicans, I guess.

One wonders if the California sales tax applies to sales of marijuana too, and if the tax-enforcement people do anything about collecting it.
If they collected it, it would bring in a bundle.

Take it from a resident of the east coasts version of California.
The more taxes and fees imposed the less that is collected.
There may be "flush" years but with the mindset of leftism it is all spent and then some so when things get pressed again the shortfall is enormous.

Dr. Laffer is going to be proved correct again. ANd again the left will determine that it is anything but higher taxes that are lowering revenue. The donks will do anything but cut spending and then complain how it is only a revenue problem.
BTW, if california had their 2006 budget there would be no deficit.

He is commenting on COUNTY tax.
I noticed the same thing while I was out in Virgina a few weeks ago- My hotel bill had:
1) Hotel Tax
1a) Room Tax (somehow different than Hotel tax- not sure how)
2) City Tax
3) County Tax
4) State Tax
Over all the taxes for a four day stay was $69.89.
