White House announces new lighting standards

WASHINGTON -- Aiming to keep the focus on climate change legislation, President Barack Obama put a plug in for administration efforts to make lamps and lighting equipment use less energy.

"I know light bulbs may not seem sexy, but this simple action holds enormous promise because 7 percent of all the energy consumed in America is used to light our homes and businesses," the president said, standing alongside Energy Secretary Steven Chu at the White House.

Obama said the new efficiency standards he was announcing for lamps would result in substantial savings between 2012 and 2042, saving consumers up to $4 billion annually, conserving enough energy to power every U.S. home for 10 months, reducing emissions equal to the amount produced by 166 million cars a year, and eliminating the need for as many as 14 coal-fired power plants.

...but I thought they were all "clean coal".  Maybe we can get Joe Biden to explain it to us.   :fuelfire:

Besides, the WH now wants to keep us all in the dark anyway.

I like the energy savings of CFLs, BUT, they don't work worth a crap when it's cold. Then there's the whole HAZMAT situation with them. (Disposal &/or breakage) I'd like to see some progress made with LED lights. Most of them are too blue to NOT be annoying. Incandescent lights RULE, at least as of today.

Did anybody notice the chandelier that was above 0bama when he made this announcement?? ALL incandescent bulbs .... :loser:

Not to worry.  That chandelier will be gone when he leaves the White House.

....along with the china, silver and draperies.

Remember kiddies, he told you to turn your themostat down last winter to save energy and slow global warming.....while he turned the WhiteHouse up to 80 deg. because he liked it hot.

Now how much you want to bet he doesn't change his bulbs because he likes it bright.

Maybe we should replace our incandescent bulbs,

with heat lamps so the AC can work harder.

The chandeliers will be the only thing in the WH that's bright for the next few years.

Montana's "rainy day" fund is tied up in the COAL TRUST FUND.  Should this state's two democrat senators vote in favor of the cap and trade and it goes into effect, they will be responsible to closing one of the last businesses having high paying jobs in this state - coal mining along the Montana/Wyoming border, not to mention the hundreds of jobs which will be lost up front, not to mention the additional hundreds or thousands of jobs effected in other segments when those hundreds are no longer buying goods and services.
