Operation Rescue, the aggressive anti-abortion group based in Wichita, Kan., made tracks to distance itself from the murder early this month of abortion doctor George Tiller.

But now the group, which hounded Tiller for years, is turning its sights on LeRoy Carhart, the Nebraska-based physician who regularly assisted Tiller.

Operation Rescue has put out the word that it wants to hear from women who sought abortions from Carhart in the last five years. It's doing a "research project" on Carhart, according to its website.

If experience is any guide, this "research project" will result in unverifiable and downright bogus allegations, which the group will make public. It's the sort of information that just might inflame an unbalanced person like Scott Roeder, the man accused of shooting Tiller in his church -- where, by the way, Operation Rescue had protested and disrupted services numerous times.

But when tragedy occurs, Operation Rescue's leaders are shocked and appalled. Or so they say.

This Tiller, Jr. has an abattoir located in Nebraska?
One can only hope it is far from the desolate Sandhills.

This Tiller, Jr. has an abattoir located in Nebraska?
One can only hope it is far from the desolate Sandhills.

Wichita, KS (LifeNews.com) -- Nebraska-based abortion practitioner LeRoy Carhart will take over the Wichita, Kansas abortion center formerly run by slain late-term abortion practitioner George Tiller. Carhart is most well known for his role in a Supreme Court case concerning a ban on partial-birth abortions.

When Nebraska lawmakers passed a ban on the partial-birth abortion procedure, which most Americans oppose, Carhart filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn the ban in court.

The Supreme Court ultimately ruled in his favor, but later reversed itself when Congress approved a national partial-birth abortion ban over Carhart's objections.

Carhart and Tiller are longtime friends and associates and Carhart told the Nebraska State Paper that he would make sure late-term abortions continue at Tiller's abortion center, which his closed this week following his shooting death on Sunday.

In his comments, Carhart called pro-life advocates "terrorists" and said Tiller's death was "a declaration of war" from the majority of Americans who take a pro-life position on abortion.

He called pro-life Americans "fundamentalist terrorists . . . no different from al-Qaida, the Taliban or any of them."

Carhart admitted he is "filled with rage" at pro-life people because of Tiller's death and added that he won't let either Tiller or his abortion center shut down.

Carhart has had troubles of his own, such as when he re-opened his Bellevue, Nebraska abortion center following an accidental fire. However, it didn't stay open long because repairs on his abortion center hadn't passed a city inspection.

He was accused of putting women's health at risk by reopening without the inspection and broke the law by operating the abortion center without an occupancy permit he needed to do so. Carhart later admitted to the Bellevue Leader newspaper that he operated without a permit for three days.

Meanwhile, local pro-life advocates, who described the exterior of the abortion building as dilapidated and says it is surrounded by rusted-out vehicles and other junk, say Carhart put women at risk a second way.

Carhart relied on a generator for power with an electrical cord running outside from the generator to the abortion facility to provide electricity. Should it have failed, women could have been in medical danger.

"Can you even imagine what would have happened if that generator had run out of gas? This just goes to show how much contempt Carhart has for the law and for women," Operation Rescue president Troy Newman said at the time. "The law is nothing more than words on a paper to him."

Despite operating without a proper permit and putting women's health at risk, Amie Newman of the pro-abortion RH Reality Check blog applauded Carhart, saying he is "uplifting, positive and based in respect for women as human beings."

She called Carhart's continuing late-term and partial-birth abortions a "circle of care and compassion."

The ABORTION & CONTRACEPTION CLINIC OF NEBRASKA, or ACCON, as it is locally known, was founded May 1, 1992 by LeRoy and Mary Lou Carhart of the Bellevue Health and Emergency Clinic, Inc., to provide a complete source of reproductive health care, to include first and second trimester abortions, for women and men of all ages.

Our mission is to provide pregnancy terminations, contraception and routine medical care to the women and men of the Midwest in a compassionate, comfortable and personal environment, recognizing the needs of each client, as an individual, while attempting to keep costs as affordable as possible.  At ACCON, each patient is given an individual appointment, receives individualized care and has a 24 hour a day, 365 days a year support person as near as their telephone.  ACCON is the only clinic in a 300x500 mile area offering a full choice of options to women seeking abortion and family planning care.

Seriously, as much as I hate the murder of innocent children, losing the mothers is a double tragedy...I sincerely hope the "doctor" is more skilled than the website designer.  You have to go to the page to see what I mean...it doesn't copy/paste correctly...

No, GOBUCKS, that's in Bellevue, south of Omaha on the Platte River.

Pretty far from the Sandhills of Nebraska.

Pretty far from the Sandhills of Nebraska.

Which is not a long stretch for the tentacles of justice.
As we've seen, they can reach much farther, all the way to the Pacific Northwest.
