Well, the world has ended. MJ has died. This is now what occupies my TV. There are people here on DU who are pissed at those of us who say "fine, let's move on". What has this man done for our society or the world?

I really want to know, what has this guy done for the common good? Tell me.

9. "What has this man done for our society or the world?"

Well, more than you.

Asshole.

The high fructose corn syrup primitive is a drek primitive, the lowest, the foulest, the primitivest, of all the tiers of primitives.

15. You don't have to care, but why whine about it in a thread?

Jeezus. Drama Queen Underground.

The orange marmalade primitive's the pot calling the kettle black.

Either that, or looking into a mirror.

17. More than YOU have , I'm certain.

Oh, I dunno.  The "Raven" primitive, other than her choice in an heir, has done some pretty significant things.

19. I have my opinions about him, which I have held for a long time. But I will not mention them at this point in time. In part it's respect for the dead. In part it's fear of the DU mob.

That's an eminently reasonable fear.

22. He raised money for AIDs. I thought that was common knowledge.

He worked with Elizabeth Taylor on it.

27. Well, if you can't guess, then you've been living under a rock for 30 years.

More likely you're just one of those people that likes to stand out by being different and attract attention by doing so.

Obviously an unterprimitiven, part of the faceless lynch mob on Skins's island.

And that is the unfortunate truth.

Yeah, it is.

Well, There was the We are the World project that generated somewhere between 8 to 9 million for hunger relief in Ethiopia -- Which for all the fanfare wasn't much at all. At that point in Jackson's career, he could have farted and 8 million bucks could have come out of his rectal orifice.

It started out with good intentions, but later became a source of high-fives and pats on the back for those who participated.

:rotf: It was closer to $100 million.  It was the song that wouldn't die.

Ill have to do some Googling

-- Okay done Googling - the answer is about 63 million - the 8 million dollar figure is the 'Do they Know Its Christmas ?' Single's earnings. My error. But even so - Small potatoes, especially considering the sheer musical firepower that was behind that song.

I never saw any photographic evidence, not one shred of any evidence, of a fly-covered child being handed a plate of food courtesy of "We Are The World".

I do, on the other hand, have mental images of tinpot dictators pocketing the money.

Charity aside, the people who did that travesty of a song should all be flogged and crucified.

And you can be certain that, if one existed, that photograph would have been shoved into our faces until we saw it in our sleep.

I would be confident betting the farm that at least 95 cents of every dollar raised by this character, and Geldof, and Willie Nelson, and every other bleeding heart do-gooder celebrity was scammed into someone's pocket - most often the celebrity himself.

Geldof even admitted his disillusionment with the lack of actual aid getting to the people who needed it.  Not sure about anybody else.

I have no idea about that but if true it was because of the governments that existed.

You know....the ones the DUmmies think are examples for the world to follow.

I was a big fan of Geldof back in the day, The Fine Art of Surfacing was one of the best albums ever made, so I kept up with him for a few years after the hullabaloo.  I never did pay much attention to the big Live Aid concert, I was in AIT at Redstone Arsenal at the time and had better things to do.

In fact, I never really pay much attention to any of these huge celebrity cause concerts, I think it was because if I like the music I don't want to associate it with some horrible situation that will make me sad every time I think of it.

This is most likely true - The dictators who ran the countries who were supposed to benefit probably took the lions share - Because the truth is, people who are hungry are pliable.
