Monday, June 22, 2009
Fox News
At least two people were killed when a six-car train collided with another train near the Washington, D.C., and Maryland border, officials said Monday.
D.C. fire spokesman Alan Etter says other passengers have been severely injured in what he describes as a "mass casualty event." He says crews are cutting apart the trains to get people out. He said there were several injuries, but did not know how many.
Spokeswoman Taryn McNeil said the collision happened about 5 p.m. between the Fort Totten and Takoma Park stations on Metro's red line.
The collision happened during rush hour on the transit agency's busiest rail line.

This is just awful. My daughter attends University of Maryland at College Park and she rides this line often. Thank God she is home for the summer. My thoughts and prayers are with the injured and people still trapped on the train.

I'm watching this live on MyFoxDC and it looks like one Metro train rear ended the other...the rear car of the lead train is on top of the lead car of the second train.
ETA: Correction to above...the train car on top rammed the the train underneath it. Looks like a switching problem...the train that got his was stopped...the train that rammed it was given the green light to continue on not knowing the other train was stopped.
Prayers for the families.

70 wounded.
The stopped train was waiting for another train to clear the Ft. Totten Station.

Up to 9 dead and 70 wounded this morning. One of the dead is the driver of the speeding train.

This is probably because of my proximity to Boston, but when this recently happened up here (thankfully without fatalities) the reason was because the driver responsible was texting while driving. -- I almost feel this is going to be the same story.

The D.C. Mertor relies on a lot of "failsafe" computers to run the trains to cut down on manpower.
The last crash they had about 8 yers ago was because a train blew threw the computer signal to stop and rammed the rear of a train sitting at the platform despite the train operator that was onboard trying to throw the brakes.

my prayers go out to the families of the victims. I too live in the D.C. area (not near the accident) but this has been on my mind since it happened. Truly awful and tragic.
