I had a microwave for 15 years. I bought it as a display model at Lowe's. It worked perfectly until Friday when it started spitting out sparks anytime you tried to heat anything other than water in it. I want to wait until payday to get a new one because I want a good one that will last until I die. Do you know how hard it is to have two kids home in the summer and no microwave?!?!?!
No microwave popcorn for snacks, no quicky hot dogs for lunch, no Chef Boyardi!!!!!11 I had to heat up leftovers on the stove, do you know how bad that sucks? Instead of bacon taking 5 minutes to fry in the microwave I had to pan fry it and it took like 20 minutes! Dang! The kids didn't even know that you could eat cheese sandwiches without heating them up. They have learned all kinds of stuff this week. I had forgotten how much it sucks to have to wash a pan 5 times a day so you can cook with it.
The dryer died on Saturday. It was probably older than this house, in fact I am still surprised it ran on electricity instead of a mule walking in circles. The last owner rigged the whole electric system together so we had to redo it from the wire to the outlet and then wire a new plug on another dryer that we had in our storage unit. It only took 7.5 hours. I am still hoarse from the obscenities I screamed at that damn dryer vent trying to put it together. They now make those in the strength of generic tin foil so you can put your finger through it about 23 times just trying to attach it to the outside vent. I want to kick the dryer hose company square in the balls for that pant load of shittiness I had to deal with.
Last night I started the dishwasher, it started making weird noises. I got out my gun and threatened to put a whole magazine in it if it didn't straighten the hell up. It did so all is well there for now.

Microwaves use to be a luxury. Time has progressed and now what was a luxury has been made a necessity due to consumer product changes which have taken place to accommodate the microwave. It's sort of like how telephones and automobiles use to be a luxury.
I've had a microwave in my house since 1982. Which, by the way, is the year we bought our current refrigerator. Our fridge still runs like a top, but the ice maker is broke and it makes noise. We went refrigerator shopping this past weekend.
It's always something.

If it takes you that long to pan fry bacon, you're doing it wrong.
Cast iron is your friend, Ma'am.

I rarely use the microwave and wouldn't miss it if it died.
Mrs. E, on the other hand, would crucify me if it died and I didn't replace it or fix it.
Interestingly, Emeril LeGasse hates 'em and won't have 'em in his kitchens.

Have the hubby check the wave guide cover! When those go bad the microwave will spark! Pretty cheap to fix actually.

To see if microwave is working properly, put cat inside. If the cat wants out, it is a good sign.
(Kidding, DUmmies! Don't put your cats in the microwave.)

Hell, just put an egg in there. If it explodes, nothin' wrong. If it hatches, yan need a new one.

Ours gets used daily.
M eats a piece of pie almost daily ...if it's fruit, he zaps it in the micro for 30 seconds.
I do water for my tea in it.
Best for reheating leftovers which happens almost daily.
Melting butter.
Newest thing is cooking corn on the cob....which I did tonight. It's scrumptious, done in butter.

Heatin' my syrup for my hotcakes is what they were invented for, I'm sure of it! Never even noticed it before then.

I start my baked potatoes in the microwave and finish them in the oven. Quick & easy.

I remember our first microwave... it was the size of a small car. It was a microwave/convection oven and it came with a cookbook and included recipes on "roasting" meat. There was a picture of an entire Thanksgiving dinner on the front. It's been at least 15 years since I had a microwave in my homebut I use the one at work because its convenient and TV dinners make cheap lunches.
Sorry for your loss, mamacags :-)

Mine from 27 years ago had a browning element. It was possible to make meat appear to be "roasted". Of course, one had to use each feature at separate times.
It did take up the counter space.

"Toots" would break my legs if she coudn't "wave" her popcorn! She's addicted I'm sure!

I will start a revolution against all anti American bullshit if mine died.
Mama..........I mean General MAMA, take the Stanley Cup state, I'll take NC
-
heh. I do like my microwave popcorn. I haven't tried popping it at home recently, but I love my cast iron pot.

I can live without a microwave, but it's convenient for some things.

It's the only was I can cook my Little Angel's "new-dulls". She won't eat them unless they're cooked "Poppell's way".

Five-year-old speak meaning "noodles", as in Ramon Noodles (chicken flavor only; remove green specks from seasoning packet).

I, being Poppell (which rhymes with "Ted Coppell"), have to cook the noodles in the microwave using our microwavable Pampered Chef sauce pan (with steamer lid). The seasoning packet must be added before cooking.

OHHHHHHHHHHH! Poppell is a person! Now it's clear as mud! lol

My grandfather bought my family it's first microwave in 1971. They were expensive then and only about 400 watts. It took 2 people to carry it, it was very heavy.

You would have been better off with an Easy Bake Oven with a 3-way bulb.

Eight minutes to cook a weiner was not too bad. Popcorn took all night. The microwave took up alot of counter space, even more then mother's liquor.

The ovens they started putting in 7-Eleven stores in 1972 were small and very powerful. A lot changed in a very short time.

My dad bought my mom a microwave for some occasion in the early 80s late 70s. It also had a picture of the meats you could cook in it if you used the thermometer that came included. He bought a GINORMOUS slab of beef and stuck it in that thing with the thermometer. A nastier tasting, rubber consistency slab of nuked beef has never been seen. We all just sat at the table and stared at it. No one had strong enough jaws to actually chew it.

Y'all just didn't know what you were doing. :-)

I got one towards the end of 1979. My daughter had finally decided to accept a bottle (she was 6 months old!) and I would warm it in the microwave.
Wanna know how many of them exploded before I figured out how to do it.... :thatsright: I used those Playtex nursing bottles and they were a plastic tube, that I put a tube-like baggie in, then filled with formula, and put the top on. If the least overheated....those puppies just exploded everywhere! I was really happy when she refused a bottle when she 11 months old..... :-)

We did that. The trick was to nuke them in 15-20 second intervals without the nipple in place.

It's a man thing Deb, we tend to know physics a little more.

My son used to blow stuff up just for fun! lol! Now I know why, heh, heh.

I was going to say something close to that but I thought the better of it.
We boys learned a lot about about how not to blow stuff up by blowing so much stuff up on purpose.

My A/C wouldn't cool on Sunday and I had a house full of people over for Father's Day. I didn't even use the big oven, just the toaster oven.
It stayed on 79 - 80 degress...and it was close to 100 degree weather here.
Today, the Central Air guy comes over and tells me I was low on Frion (sp?)...so he charged it up and told me he'll come back in 4 weeks to check for leak in the coils....
Never a dull moment.

Whatever you do, do not get the Freon leak fixed. I know it is expensive to keep having it recharged, but think about how much you are helping with GlowBull Warming. :rotf:

It's a wonder I still have all my fingers! We used to get roman candles and shoot them at each other! I got really brave (stupid) once and actually held one of those big rockets in my hand while my partner in crime lit the fuse. I still have the scar! It all came to realization when one blew up not more than a foot away from my face! That was pretty much the end of my experimentation with fireworks doncha know!
-
Can you microwave a Roman Candle? Hmmm? :devious:

I was an only child til mid teens......and very much a girly girl.
Married a doctor who would have needed directions to find his way out of a paper bag, much less blow something up.
Have spent the last 15.5 years with a mechanical engineer...who created a "degree" for himself making things go boom! I'm not sure the statute of limitations is up on some of the things he did 50+ years ago!!! :o :o :o
It's a good thing my son, at 10-12 yrs old, did not know what could be done with metal tubes and a box of stick matches.... :uhsure:
I, on the other hand, was being creative yesterday, and decided to melt lemon curd in the microwave....not only did it boil and make a mess.....that stuff stayed hot a long time..... :thatsright:
-
Lemon curd? WTH is that?
Never mind - I don't wanna know....

Lemon curd is an awesome, tasty lemon spread that you can put on toast or bagels. It's made with lemon juice, sugar, and lemon peel.

It's almost like a lemon jelly, but more solid. It's most often used as filling in between cake layers.
I had this idea yesterday for a cake....
I made a lemon pudding cake, with fresh blueberries, fresh lemon juice, pulp and grated zest in it. Did it in a bundt pan.
When it came out of the pan, I poured the melted lemon curd on it, then a lemon/butter/powdered sugar glaze over the top of it.
It was incredible ....if I do say so myself! The other three who ate it thought so too. :-)

I always thought it was something gross due to the name until I realized what it was.
Dumb name for it.

I call it Lemon Marmalade.

Still no microwave. I used to think it would be cool to live like pioneers for a while. I have since decided that my family would starve to death if they waited for me to cook using a fire.
-
It's not so bad. You get used to it after awhile.
You'll make it. I have faith in you. :)
-
I only have to make it until tomorrow. I already have one picked out I am just waiting for the paycheck to be deposited.
