Continental Airlines captain dies in flight (breaking on MSNBC)

No link or story yet. As they were going to break, Carlos Watson announced the headline, above. The only added detail is that the plane is close to landing at Newark, NJ.

1. It will land at noon. There is another first officer on board as well as the co-pilot.

They won't announce the flight number or where in Europe it is coming from since the pilot's family doesn't know yet.

3. They told when it was due, so the family probably has a hint and may have been called already.. They should have said nothing until the plane landed. It's in no danger..

2. The plane is an inbound 777 from Europe, expected to land at noon

There was another first officer deadheading (poor choice of words in view of the story) and he is now in the cockpit, so there is more than enough skill/experience in the cockpit.

The plane will get priority for landing when it gets to Newark.

4. Deadheading...it does sound a little insensitive but it is the correct term.

The media actually got something right...

5. Yeah, the guy who reported the details (Tom - something) knows aviation inside and out

Deadheading is the proper term, indeed.

One wonders what the proper term is, for a guy who watches television while s itting on the can in the basement.

13. Oh, I'm sure SOP would be to prop up the corpse in coach

If it's a long enough flight, he goes in luggage. The point is, get the corpse away from business class.

7. From the BNO Newsroom.

NEWARK, New Jersey (BNO NEWS) -- Continental Airlines flight 61 from Brussels, Belgium to Newark, New Jersey has declared an emergency after the pilot died in-flight, FAA officials tell BNO News.

The aircraft involved is a Boeing 777. "It is reported that the captain of the aircraft passed away," a spokeswoman for the FAA said. She said two first officers are now piloting the aircraft until it will land in Newark. The aircraft has declared an emergency and will receive priority handling at the airport.

The aircraft is expected to land between 11.45 a.m. and noon EDT.

9. It's raining in Newark. Not something any commercial pilot should be worried about, but it does add another complication to an already complicated situation.

Good luck to them.

11. Plane has landed at Newark ...... Flt CO61 from Brussels

As for all long hauls, there were three qualified pilots on board, one being a mandated spare. The cockpit was never undermanned and the flight was never actually in any particular trouble.

This is a news story, sure, but not the breathless reporting that it is getting.

Sticky the Clown ....... over and out.

I just can't get over the fact that ANYONE would (proudly) change their screen name to "Stinky the Clown". One wonders if he makes those little balloon animals whilst sitting on the commode.

The plane with 247 passengers aboard landed on time just before noon at Newark Liberty International Airport. It left Brussels at 9:45 a.m.

If these idiots would actually go to a legit news site they wouldn't look so stupid saying stuff like what I quoted above.

Actually, reading his commentary.....I thought he was rather ghoulish. If he had been listening to a "fair and balanced" network, he would have known from the beginning there are always 3 pilots on board on a transoceanic flight....

Continental is really getting some "awkward" press....first Buffalo, then the flight when the tire blew out, now this...all flights going/in out of Newark. Continental also partners with Air France (the flight out of Brazil was AF)

I'd be more concerned by what he is inflating those balloon animals with.. God help the poor kid that breaks one.  :-)

It is also a term that jobless hippies who used to follow the Grateful Dead everywhere gave to themselves.

BTW, "Deadhead" is also a term used by truckers.

It is used by plumbers and water utilities, too.  It refers to the capped-off water line stubbed-out onto a property from the city main line, waiting for a future meter.
