WASHINGTON - -- He was appointed with fanfare as the public watchdog over the government's multi-billion dollar bailout of the nation's financial system. But now Neil Barofsky is embroiled in a dispute with the Obama administration that delayed one recent inquiry and sparked questions about his ability to freely investigate.

The disagreement stems from a claim by the Treasury Department that Barofsky is not entirely independent of the agency he is assigned to examine ¿ a claim that has prompted a stern letter from a Republican senator warning that agency officials are encroaching on the integrity of an office created to protect taxpayers.

Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, sent the letter Wednesday to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner demanding information about a "dispute over certain Treasury documents" that he said were being "withheld" from Barofsky's office on a "specious claim of attorney-client privilege."

A White House spokesman declined to comment, referring questions to the Treasury Department. Treasury spokesman Andrew Williams said late Wednesday that the agency would read Grassley's letter and respond to the senator before any public comment.

Valid criminal activity, along with know violations of bankruptcy laws, but still no calls for impeachment?

People are too emotionally invested in Obama to even contemplate such things.

Hi,

The guy who got fired has been on Glenn Beck's show twice.  It is a travesty what is happening.  BO is supposed to give congress 30 days notice and the reason why for the firing, neither of which was done.  BO can not claim he does not know that because he co-sponsored the bill that made it law.

They then came out with some ficticious smear job and it stinks.  This guy is trying to protect our tax dollars and this crap goes on.  It is just one more example how the damn politicians have absolutely no regard for spending our tax dollars wisely.

If Bush had done that they would have already started impeachment hearings.

regards,

They wanted to do that anyway, after those 8 attorney generals were fired. He, like Clinton, had every right to do that. However, Obama clearly broke the very law he co-sponsored and all we're hearing is how he might as well be Bruce Lee for killing a fly.

And Charlie Gibson shacking up with Barry in the White House is just a coincidence.  Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
