Title: Horse question of the day....
Post by: Chris_ on June 16, 2009, 05:03:22 PM
I live out in teh sticks, and quite a few of the people in the area keep horses.  I have ridden horses many times before, but know exactly squat about care and maintenance.

Saw one the other day on the way home that was a little unusual. The horse was wearing a "mask"...don't know the correct term, but it renders the horse blind...as in a blindfold.  I've seen them before and can't figure out why they're wearing them.  The horse in question was running a full gallop in a small fenced-in field.  How do he know where he is and not run into da fence?  Why the "mask"?

Maybe it was a mask to protect the horse's eyes from flies?

It's possible the horse had corneal injuries to the eye, or had surgery of some sort. They do mask a horse for this sometime if an enclosed barn is not available.Horse mask (http://www.horsemask.com/)

Yup! The horse can see through the mesh.

That makes sense.  Couldn't figure out why the horse was running so fast, but couldn't see.

I can sleep now.   :-)

Sometimes they also have blinders so they don't get spooked so easily.

It makes it easier for the DUmmies to sneak up on them.  :uhsure:

You'd think that would help, but here's a horses a$$ that a DUmmie was able to sneak up on quite easily.   :-)

Yep it's a fly mask. I use them all the time when the flies get thick in late summer.
