She has a Horton book that is probably 65 years old, she read it to all of us when we were little.

I love Dr. Seuss. His books are genius and his TV cartoons have been fun and interesting, for the most part. But Hollywood has yet to do the good Doctor justice. So I will take the wait and see attitude.

we saw the commercial today for the movie.. our 8 year old didnt know it was a book..

in Bellevue Square ( a mall here) there used to be an art gallery that had all this Dr. Seuss stuff in it.. we thought it was cool and passed by it for years. one day we finally went in the place to look at the paintings and the character heads that were mounted.. like something you'd see over a fireplace, but really whimsical..
HOLY SHIT.. the price tags were all well over 3K, and that was the small stuff.
a life sized portrait of the Cat in the Hat was almost 10 grand...
anything from Dr. Seuss is my husband's all time favorite kid stuff ... but we decided to enjoy it from afar.. :-)

The original animated TV show exactly captured the book and the point.
Why mess around with something that is already done?
As someone upthread pointed out, the good Doctor's works have suffered badly at the hands of Hollywood, which seems not to get it.

It was OK -- but it doesn't come close offsetting The Cat In The Hat.
And the 1/2 hour animated Grinch was a thousand times better than the live-action version.

Oh, I know the original is far better, but I still enjoy the movie.
It only took the trailer for the Cat In the Hat movie for me to be turned off by it.

I guess I thought it was okay when I first saw it but over time I've grown more dissatisfied with it. Mostly it was just too long for the material they had. Maybe if someone ever does a Phantom Edit of it, it could be whittled down to a nice crisp 30-45 minute movie.
The whole love interest thing was just so dumb.
I would say it succeeded in realizing Whoville to an extent and Jim Carey was good as the Grinch.
I just hope they don't screw up Green Eggs and Ham. Probably it would end up as Mauve Eggs and Tofacon. And Sam would probably be recast as Samantha so they can have a love interest. And the unnamed character's dislike of Mauve Eggs and Tofacon would be a stand in for Evil Conservative Intolerance(TM).

I used to think the love-interest thing was kinda cute, but as I've gotten older, I've realized how silly it was.
For me, Jim really made the Grinch over the top, and I liked that. The make-up was absolutely astonishing, as you couldn't recognize Jim at all.

I totally agree with you about Jim Carrey I think his rubbery expressions enhanced the make up. And the Green Eggs and Ham was just a fantasy. I have a very active imagination and a rich fantasy life. Sometimes it translates well and other times...not so much.
Mauve Eggs and Tofacon just sounded funny to me. :-)

the Cat In the Hat movie did indeed suck.. it was kind of dark for a kid film. Mike Meyers should stick with the adult stuff...
this Horton movie looks pretty cute though.. I do wonder how Hollyweird could screw it up though. I mean, who would have thought Happy Feet (the penguin movie) would be so political.. ?

The Cat in the Hat movie was very horrible. I still don't know why I watched it.
Alec Baldwin was actually kind of funny as the jerk boyfriend.

the length of it may indeed spoil the whole thing...
just as long as its geared toward kids, and not some social/psycho drama for us adults cause we're in the theater... i'm SO sick of that garbage..
