We live in a society where the ONLY way to get ahead, or even get by depends upon a person being able to be on the 'net. Got that? It's where people find information about jobs, and services, and places to live. Shelters.
If I see one more stupid mother****ing jackass sonofabitch dumb**** ask why poor people are on the internet one more ****ing time I am going to really blow a gasket.
AND... for the "public library" dumb mother****ers... wife is a librarian. There is limited time on the public computers. Take a flying leap. We are WELL aware of what is out there.

There is a great tendency here to jump on the "judgment wagon"
Even if there were no job resources, or other things you mentioned, poor people have a right to be connected to friends and family and to have everything the 'net has to offer, even if it is entertainment.
And any poor person with school children MUST have the internet.
Because you just can't get all the info you need at a library, the way we did. :lmao: :lmao:

So, ATT&T Basic Service is $20 a month...(plus the modem, plus the computer, plus the phone line...). We spend less than $40.00 a week on groceries. Sometimes a LOT less. We eat good, too.

How in the world did I get my first job and paycheck without the "net". How in the world did I learn to drive a nail, use a shovel or drive a truck without the "net"? I didn't have the "net" for 50+ years......why didn't I starve to death in that length of time?.....lotta baby fat I guess. huh.

The internet is useful in looking for a job, but I'm pretty sure I found my current job in the newspaper's classified section. I'll concede the the internet would probably be the last of my luxuries to go, but if I were truly in desperate straits, then I would be at the library if I wanted to be on the internet. And yes, they have time slots that you sign up for, but if you are unemployed, then you could easily figure out when the library is least busy and go then. My local library certainly doesn't mind if you take more than one time slot if nobody is waiting.

Well, my husband found his job on Craigslist of all places. Still, the Internet is a luxury and it would've been one of the first things to go if we hadn't been able to afford it. You'd be amazed what "egg money" can provide. Of course, you have to be willing to work for it.

Every month, my mom bought 50lbs of flour, bags of potatoes, whole chickens which she cut up, a sack of rice, beans, etc. She baked bread every day. I used to think that store bought bread was such a treat, used to trade my sandwiches at school for ones made with Wonder bread. Kids thought I was nuts.
We were dirt poor but I can't ever remember going hungary. Saw something on the TV news a couple months ago where they were interviewing a welfare recipient in a grocery store complaining that she didn't get enough money for food. In her cart was all kind of processed crap dinners plus chips and soda. Duh!

And yeah, the Net is a START for some jobs, but certainly not the end-all, be-all. Bottom line, you gotta network and pick up a damned phone, not to mention put out a resume TARGETED to your employer, not just a, "I wanna get PAID!" three-line POS resume (which I've seen, sadly.)

Your mom knew how to respect a dollar. That's the key to success in any endeavor. I happen to be an excellent cook and I know the value of our food budget. We can eat gourmet meals for five bucks and less.

You definately have a point there sir! Still, even for a samich, I'd rather have Nana's bread, She was an artist! The art is in being able to cut it to the right thickness. Most store bought is tasteless in my opinion, Nana's had a taste that cannot be compared to "wonder bread".

I love home made bread but as a kid I would have killed for wonder bread with kraft cheese and a bowl of Campbell's soup. Instead I usually got home made bread with yucky real cheese and chicken soup from scratch. Now I force my kids to eat the same way, except I do buy wonder bread.
