S.F. to impose fines for tossing food scraps

SAN FRANCISCO - Trash collectors in San Francisco will soon be doing more than just gathering garbage: They'll be keeping an eye out for people who toss food scraps out with their rubbish.

San Francisco this week passed a mandatory composting law that is believed to be the strictest such ordinance in the nation. Residents will be required to have three color-coded trash bins, including one for recycling, one for trash and a new one for compost — everything from banana peels to coffee grounds.

*snip*

Food scraps sent to a landfill decompose fast and turn into methane gas, a potent greenhouse gas. Under the new system, collected scraps will be turned into compost that helps area farms and vineyards flourish. The city eventually wants to eliminate waste at landfills by 2020.

Uh, yeah.  Now they can't siphon off that gas and sell it.  Idiots. :whatever:

Vermin, hot and cold running dysentery, and that wonderful smell.  Yummy!

BTW--it's also a great way to exact revenge on your asshat neighbors when you put YOUR food scraps in THEIR cans.

San Francisco was so beautiful before these idiots took control.

San Francisco IS beautiful.  It's the people who are ugly.

BTW.....when I first bought my home in the North Georgia mountains, I asked the city if they provided recycle bins..and the lady just looked at me and said.."We don't do that here" [you damn yankee]  :lmao:

South Florida does provide recycle bins and I really don't mind doing that...but getting fined for a rogue banana peel is ridiculous....

Well that is what I meant...I would love to have lived there, if the liberals didn't control it...but it's way too expensive anyway.

I have visited SF a couple of times.  Got tired of climbing streets.

The idea of adding another trash can for compost isn't a bad idea in and of itself.  It's the fine you would get for accidentally putting food in the wrong container that is insane.  I would gladly recycle and conserve more if I didn't feel like it was being FORCED down my throat.  Now when I see anything that has the recycle symbol or "Green Week" on NBC or what ever, it makes me want to go all anarchist and waste even more.

Assuming the "composting" actually involves some aeration and agitation, rather than just dumping all the food scraps in a giant inert pile, the decomposition products are still greenhouse gases, just more CO2 and less methane.  There's not any real difference at all if it's just a huge pile.

We have a recycling Nazi in my office.  God help you if you put the wrong item in the wrong container.  He WILL find you.   :innocent:  One of my co-workers got "caught" and ended up telling him to go compost himself.   :lmao:

People will find ways to hide it in other trash or otherwise dumping it somewhere else.  The only ones doing this will be the kooks who wanted it anyway.

Soooo...

Am I to assume that in-sink garbage disposals are illegal in PR SanFran as well?  It'd be a shame for all of that potential compost to go swirling down the sewer pipe...

This will quickly be followed by a fat tax imposed on the residents of S.F. who now have to eat EVERYTHING on their plate for fear of getting hit with the "food scrap" fine.

I had a conversation with the Director of Public Works in Becker, MN when I lived there. It was about possibly placing publicly accessible recycling containers at the compost facility for cardboard, aluminum cans, etc. as I had seen/used then when I was in Va Beach, Va.  She stated that she had witnessed a "Recycling truck" back up to a local landfill and dump it's contents. She was pretty much against recycling. In the same vein, Becker had a recycling box program.  :thatsright:

Anyways, I'm all for recycling, BUT, they need to make it easier. Some of the rules make it very inconvenient to recycle. An example would be" all labels need to be removed from glass containers". Ummm, duh..... they MELT glass in order to make NEW glass items, wouldn't the process burn off the labels ??

Whenever I encounter one of these holier-than-thou recycling nazi's (which is rare, but occasional), I'll "accidentally" print out the wrong 150 page report.  I make sure to walk by the a-hole's cube muttering what I did.

Bouncy, or true? :-)

I sorta feel bad for you.....my former employer transferred us to the LA area in 1985 for three years, and it was beginning to go to hell then.......at least when we left we made a ton on our house (we lived in Ventura County), but other than the good weather (which became boring after a while) I was glad to get out of there......

I already know how much the taxes are out there.  All these taxes and all these rich people yet they are cutting programs in the schools.  Most of them don't even have an Orchestra (my daughter plays the cello).  What the hell do they do with their money?

Stop trying to make me feel worse or I will put a pox on your house...... :hammer:

The problem that you will find with the schools (admittedly I speak from experience that is approaching two decades old) is:

1.  Prop 13 capped real estate taxes, and cut off runaway education spending on all but the most essential programs.

2.  The teachers union, and the general "political correctness" of the population and therefore the cirriculum.

3.  So much of the limited education budjet has to be directed toward education for the illegals that there is nothing left for the children of the actual taxpayers.

All that said, when we relocated ( and my wife and I have done so 17 times during our marriage) the first criteria for selecting a place to buy was based on the performance of the school district.....and there are still some good ones in California, but you will have to do your homework, and you might have to live in an area where you have a long commute......we ended up in Thousand Oaks, and when we first arrived, my office was in Santa Monica.......tough commute every day........but since I was the boss, I eventually relocated the office to a better spot for all of the employees in my unit......things work out.....

We are currently looking at Fullerton (Sunny Hills High School and Fern Drive Elem), Brea, Huntington Beach, Los Alamitos and a couple of other places.  Yeah my husband is going to have to commute big time.

This is great news! The liberal asshat scumbag liberals voted those scumbag liberal Nazis into office so they deserve every bit of pain they get from them. The more money it costs them, the more pain and restrictions they have to live under, the tighter the leftist noose is around their necks, the better.
Maybe they can get relief from that old faggot that beats-off on the street corner in public during their gay demented pride festivals.

Not only that, but I usually flush all the toilets when I go to the bathroom.  And leave the water running when I leave.  But those pesky motion activated ones are tricky.

Some older folks have a hard enough time getting one can out to the curb, having this as a law is stupid in my opinion.  Could you imagine how a "food only" can will smell? Are you allowed to use bags?
