Flight AF447 crashed in the mid-Atlantic en route to Paris during a violent storm.
While it is certain that there were computer malfunctions, terrorism has not been ruled out."  Sky News (http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/World-News/Terror-Names-Linked-To-Doomed-Flight-AF-447-Two-Passengers-Shared-Names-Of-Radical-Muslims/Article/200906215300405?lpos=World_News_Carousel_Region_0&lid=ARTICLE_15300405_Terror_Names_Linked_To_Doomed_Flight_AF_4)

"TWO passengers with names linked to Islamic terrorism were on board the doomed Air France flight which crashed with the loss of 228 lives, it emerged today.
French intelligence agents recognised the names while working through the list of those who boarded the doomed Airbus in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on May 31st.

Flight AF447 crashed in mid-Atlantic en route to Paris during a violent storm.

Threat

Air France also received a bomb threat in Brazil four days before the doomed flight crashed.

Soon after news of the fatal crash broke, agents working for the DGSE (Direction Generale de la Securite Exterieur), the French equivalent of MI6, were dispatched to Brazil.

It was there that they established that two names on the passenger list are also on highly classified documents listing the names of radical Muslims considered a threat to the French Republic.

A source working for the French security services told a French newspaper that the link was "highly significant". The Sun (http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2474307/Terror-suspects-were-on-AF447.html?OTC-RSS&ATTR=News)

Combine this with the bomb threat they had recieved the day before...

There seems to be a lot of plausible factors in the cause of this crash.  I wonder if we'll ever know.

Terrorists want recognition for their plots....this is not their usual MO.

They may not have been part of a larger group.  It could have been a couple people acting on their own.  Like the shooter in Arkansas, or the bomb plotters in New York.

Then again this is the French we are talking about.  They may not want to acknowledge it was an act of terrorism or they will be expected to wave the white flag of surrender. :)

Sarkozy is not Chirac or even Mitterand. He's a scrappy, feisty kinda guy.

Compared with Lord Zero, Sarkozy is a distinguished Warrior who doesn't put up with any bullshit.

Actually, you're wrong. There were a couple of terror plots uncovered post 9/11 whose intentions were to blow up aircraft over the pacific ocean.

Keep in mind, the NTSB also concluded that EgyptAir Flight 990 was the result of suicide on the co-pilot.  How many stories have we heard/seen about aircrew uniforms going missing, etc...?

Just sayin.

I'm just saying, no one has called the French yet and have claimed responsibility for it...then again, Al Quaeda didn't claim responsibility for the 9/11 attacks until a bit later after Osama was safe in his secret cave...... I am sure ANYTHING is possible.

I'm more worried about it being a structural issue with the Airbus A330, but there's always the possibility it was a bomb.  The fact that the French are being very quiet on the issue is very disturbing.

An update...
Quote
French authorities investigating the accident that claimed the lives of 216 passengers and 12 crew members are still at the early stages of determining the cause. But preliminary evidence has already made it clear that the flight crew was battling a multitude of problems during the final four minutes.

The jetliner sent out 24 automated messages about abnormalities to Air France's maintenance department in the minutes before the crash. The airline has not released that data, but some information has been leaked to outside aviation experts, and ultimately to the news media.

The initial event, based on what is known so far, was the simultaneous failure of three sensors that determine airspeed. The sensors are called pitot tubes, a decades-old technology that pilots still depend upon.
