U.N. Official Calls for Worldwide Ban on Plastic Bags
Paper or plastic? Soon, you may not hear that question anymore.
A top U.N. official on Monday called for a worldwide ban on single-use "thin" plastic shopping bags, the kind you get at the grocery store.
"Single-use plastic bags which choke marine life should be banned or phased out rapidly everywhere," said Achim Steiner, head of the U.N. Environment Program, according to McClatchy Newspapers. "There is simply zero justification for manufacturing them any more, anywhere."
*snip*
But the plastic-bag industry says that its bags aren't the problem — it's the people who throw them out.
"Recycling is what we see as the best approach for the U.S.," Keith Christman of the American Chemistry Council told McClatchy. "Plastic is just too valuable to waste."
I'm sure glad the UN is out there telling me what is best. :whatever:

The UN would REALLY hate me. When I lived in MN, I'd do some shopping at Cub Foods. I would place a paper bag inside one of those plastic bags. That made them easier to carry. I DID, however, dispose of the plastic bags properly.

I like the paper bags because they hold more and don't let everything in them roll around the car on the way home, but I despise the "rolled eyes look" from the sacker at the grocery store when I ask for paper bags. Most of 'em have no idea how to load a paper bag.

Hell, most of them don't know how to load the plastic bags, either.

True...it's not like they hire rocket surgeons for those jobs. :-)

The store that we shop at most , you have to bag your own groceries and they have both paper and plastic available. We use both depending on what is being bagged up.

WTF?!?!?!
What am I supposed to carry my sea turtle eggs home in?

I worked in a little grocery store at one point in my adult life and I loved when people asked for paper. You could get more in it and it just seemed to stack and organize better.
Forget about paper, most of the teenage boys bagging don't know how to load plastic either! Logically though, it kinda makes sense, they probably haven't done an awful lot of grocery shopping to understand the repercussions of bagging improperly, but you think they'd figure it out at some point. These stores actually give lessons on bagging--lol.
