Title: Obama promises more than 600,000 stimulus jobs

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is promising to deliver more than 600,000 jobs through his $787 billion stimulus plan this summer, repackaging a pledge the administration made weeks earlier as the economy continues to lose hundreds of thousands of jobs each month.
Obama spotlighted billions in federal agency spending planned this summer in an announcement Monday designed to draw attention to his stimulus program. Much of the spending he announced already was in the works, including hundreds of maintenance projects at military bases, about 1,600 state road and airport improvements, and federal money states budgeted for 135,000 teachers, principals and school support staff.
Obama's promise to create large numbers of jobs — a vow that Vice President Joe Biden made last month — quickly drew criticism from oponents and economists who have argued his stimulus plan thus far hasn't delivered.
"I think these estimates are overly optimistic," said Arpitha Bykere, a senior analyst with RGE Monitor.
Bykere said it likely will be later this year before any meaningful job creation occurs from stimulus spending.

Here ya go big guy. This project should fit in nicely with "green energy", and some of your pledges about "clean coal technology". That is if you didn't meant what you said about driving the coal industry to bankruptcy. Decatur has some of the highest unemployment in the state of Illinois.

DECATUR - The $800 million Secure Energy Inc. coal gasification energy project made a big step forward this week with the arrival of two giant gasifiers and their feeder units.

The 60-foot-long cylindrical gasifiers are 14 feet wide and weigh 220 tons each. Lying on their sides on railcars next to two similarly shaped but smaller feeders, they look like giant rocket stages from the days of the Apollo moon shots.

St. Louis-based Secure Energy said it's not shooting for the stars but aiming for the future of American energy independence. The gasifiers, parked near the 28-acre Secure Energy site behind the Caterpillar Inc. plant, will chemically convert 1.3 million tons of Illinois coal a year into 21 billion cubic feet of synthetic natural gas - enough to fuel 275,000 homes.

"So, on a yearly basis, more than 275,000 Illinois residents can count on having a domestic supply of clean-burning natural gas from our plant," said Jack Kenny, Secure Energy co-founder.

The question now is when the gas will start flowing. With the world's financial markets paralyzed and investors sitting on the sidelines, Secure Energy must store its gasifiers and look to the government to provide the financial spark needed to ignite the project.

The company has applied for $647 million in Department of Energy loan guarantees, which means the faith and credit of the government would back Secure Energy's debt. Even better, according to Kenny, is a provision that would allow the company to apply to something called the Federal Financing Bank to actually receive the money.

Thought he was looking for perminant jobs. MOST Summer jobs are usual and are created by the season. Lifeguards, wait staff, pool service, golf course associated jobs, and do on.

The Germans had such plants as the coal gasification during WW2.

A visual of how many jobs the stimulus package has saved since being signed.

The Pimpmaster from Houston is gonna pass a 600K pound turd.

Hey, I'd put my money on that likelihood over Obuma's promise.

Sounds more like Juan and Evita Peron of Argentina. They ruined Argentina and were dictators that went after anyone who dissented against them.

What do these alleged jobs pay?

Utility positions pay quite well, if you can get them, and plenty of OT--even if you DON'T want it.  Then again, it ain't just, "Flippin the switches and impressin the bitches," either.  It takes a good deal of experience and it ain't sitting at a desk sippin coffee type of work.

However, I'm thinking $800 million for a gasification plant?  Seems a bit high.  To power 275K homes is about 300 MW.  You can build a dual 500MW plant (1000MW total) for less than that, and that's just to run the stoves/dryers/heaters, not provide electricity.

Yeah, someone isn't really looking at the cost here, methinks.

So, let's cut the political crap and get this going. Of course, Obama WILL NOT as it is POWER he's interested in, not the people.

I don't see what's so good about 600,000 new jobs when you're losing 9 million in the public sector.  It just doesn't add up at the end of the day.

A mere $1311666.00 per job.  Yeah... that's real cost effective.
