Title: Easily Grossed Out? You Might Be A Conservative!

ScienceDaily (June 5, 2009) — Are you someone who squirms when confronted with slime, shudders at stickiness or gets grossed out by gore? Do crawly insects make you cringe or dead bodies make you blanch?

If so, chances are you're more conservative -- politically, and especially in your attitudes toward gays and lesbians -- than your less-squeamish counterparts, according to two Cornell studies.

To this day I cannot watch when the phlebotomist draws my blood. Not too many years ago, I'd get nauseous, break out in a cold sweat, all that stuff. Not too often these days.

Yeah, I know. Sigh. I'm a wimp.

I doubt these studies...most farmers and ranchers are conservatives, and well able to deal with about any kind of slimy mess.  I'd seen more blood, manure, and slimy messes before I left the farm than I've dealt with the rest of my life...even with raising 5 kids.

Bunnies are renowned for their genteel sensibilities.

As are hunters, soldiers, blue collar types, etc.

What are they smoking at Cornell?

I know very few conservatives that are squimish.

I'm sure there was no prejudice in this "objective" study.   ::) ::) ::)

Disgust sensitivity predicts intuitive disapproval of gays.By Inbar, Yoel; Pizarro, David A.; Knobe, Joshua; Bloom, Paul
Emotion. Vol 9(3), Jun 2009, 435-439.
Abstract
Two studies demonstrate that a dispositional proneness to disgust (“disgust sensitivity”) is associated with intuitive disapproval of gay people. Study 1 was based on previous research showing that people are more likely to describe a behavior as intentional when they see it as morally wrong (see Knobe, 2006, for a review). As predicted, the more disgust sensitive participants were, the more likely they were to describe an agent whose behavior had the side effect of causing gay men to kiss in public as having intentionally encouraged gay men to kiss publicly—even though most participants did not explicitly think it wrong to encourage gay men to kiss in public. No such effect occurred when subjects were asked about heterosexual kissing. Study 2 used the Implicit Association Test (IAT; Nosek, Banaji, & Greenwald, 2006) as a dependent measure. The more disgust sensitive participants were, the more they showed unfavorable automatic associations with gay people as opposed to heterosexuals.

Of course, you'd have to buy the article to get the details...probably a waste of good money.  I wonder if our tax dollars paid for this "important" study?

I don't know if this bears any resemblance to the test quoted in the slanted study...and I couldn't interpret the results, but the questions are interesting.   :-)

I took that little survey and the results didn't indicate my actual responses.  So...  that little survey is bogus.

Hmmm, if I was so grossed out by anything gorey (Al Gore is one thing... an open gash with bone sticking through it, not so gross to me....alright, bad joke is over, sorry! :uhsure:), I wouldn't be going into the medical field now would I? that study is BS.  :whatever:

I also grew up around cleaning up after animals (pet parrots)... they might not make as much a mess, but from the views of those who've never owned birds, apparently they stink just as badly as other animals.  I wouldn't know, as I'm used to it and don't really notice it.  :p

I do get disgusted when couples, both gay and straight, are practically going at it in public, in full view of children.   :mental:  :puke:

More likely that it came from government funds rather than a corporate grant.

Disagree about parrots stinking. No way. Been living with adornments on my shoulders for years now and have never known parrot poop to stink. It LOOKS nasty, but really has no odor. And I have a super-sensitive schnozz. Now, if a bird were sick, that's another story.

You're just used to the smell..... captive birds DO stink!! (So do I, at times)

Disagree again, Hammer-man. I know stink when I smell it, whether birds are involved or not. I'd agree that some birds have an odor - I remember fostering an Amazon that had a very interesting smell - not unpleasant, btw. But ours do not.

Our grey gets a shower every day, and the eclectus about 3 times a week. The showers aren't to combat stink, they prompt preening and feather lubrication.

No stinkee.

Well, I actually get grossed out easily. I can take out trash. I can clean a bathroom. I also used to enjoy dissection projects because I got an upclose look at an animal. That's about as far as it goes. I don't like to touch bugs for any reason. If one drops on me, I might scream over it. I wasn't always like that. I get weak if blood is discussed a lot. If I'm watching a horror film, I have to turn my head a lot. I'm a conservative. lol.

Yeah, maybe...but you're really new at it, yet.   :-)
