BOSTON --
The Boston Police Department wants to arm neighborhood patrol officers with high-powered military assault weapons, but the mayor doesn't think it's such a good idea.
Boston Mayor Tom Menino said Friday he will not approve a police department plan to put semiautomatic M-16 rifles in the hands of regular patrol officers. But Menino says he's open to giving them to "specialized units."
The police recently obtained 200 M-16s free of charge from the U.S. military and had planned to give them to dozens of officers for their patrols after training them to use the rifles.
However, some community leaders criticized the lack of public notice and questioned the reasoning behind arming district officers with M-16s when the city's SWAT team already has such weapons.

I don't see what would be wrong with these being carried in patrol cars, just in case they are needed, Lord knows the criminals are usually better armed than the cops anyway.

Guess he never heard of North Hollywood.

It's a sacrifice, true, but I'd be willing to take them off his hands.
:naughty:

M-16s are not high powered.
I bet the Boston police department would not support law abiding citizens owning such firearms.

When they fail to learn from History.......

That, sir, goes without saying. You'd be amazed what constitutes and illegal firearm in the People Republik of Massholistan.

1. M-16's are not semi-automatic. They are select fire. AR-15's are semi-automatic.
2. The .223/5.56 cartridge is not "high-powered". It is an intermediate cartridge, at best.
3. Apparently neither the mayor nor the author of the article know shit from wild honey about ballistics. Soft point .223 is actually safer in an urban environment than heavier handgun rounds. Due to their velocity and light weight (55-62 grains vs. 230 grains in my personal duty pistol), they fragment upon impact with walls, reducing risk to bystanders. I really wish politicians and the media would educate themselves before shouting the anti-gun meme like braying jackasses.
Hit the link and read the comments. The Mayor gets himself well-flamed.
