Half of the men arrested in 10 U.S. cities test positive for some type of illegal drug, a federal study found.
Not only do the findings show "a clear link between drugs and crime," they also highlight the need to provide drug treatment, says Gil Kerlikowske, director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, which will make the data public Thursday.

Assessing offenders for drug and mental health problems and providing treatment is "important if you want to stop recidivism and recycling people through the system," says Kerlikowske, who supports drug courts that offer court-ordered drug treatment.

"There's an opportunity when someone is arrested to divert them to treatment if they need it," says Bill Piper, director of national affairs for the Drug Policy Alliance Network, a group that supports legalizing marijuana and treating drug use as a public health issue. "But people shouldn't have to get arrested to get treatment."

In 2008 researchers interviewed and obtained urine samples from 3,924 men arrested in 10 metropolitan areas: Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Denver, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, New York, Portland, Ore., Sacramento and Washington, D.C.

Aw jeez, here we go again.  0Bama has stated before that we need to reassess how young criminals are treated with regards to treatment versus incarceration.

Sure there is a correlation between committing crimes and drug use. Too many addicts can't keep a job, so they resort to crime for money.  They needed to do a study for that?

Didn't they try this crap in the 60s and 70s only to make crime a winning issue for the GOP in the 80s.

Does this paste-eater think he's immune to history?

I think so, and most people do not want to be soft on crime. That is why there are "Three Strike Laws".  What interested me about this study, is that the criminals were under arrest for crimes other than drugs.  Do drugs cause people to commit crimes? If the answer is yes, then that reinforces the need for the "war on drugs.

NEWSFLASH!

For immediate release:

A recent study has determined that half of men arrested in 10 cities are NOT on drugs. Elmer P Fudd of the Miami Beach Sheriffs department is quoted as saying, "Gee golly damn, only half huh? I'd of figured at least 3/4's to 90% of the assh*les we arrest is high. Looks like them treatment programs is wurkin after all."

The Obam-bam Administration when asked to comment had a different spin of course.

Meanwhile, the nation is still digesting the news that most railroad crossing fatalities happen in Texas instead of Rhode Island.

Had a character of an uncle that lived in R.I.. He was the Conductor on Pullman Coaches. He used to joke that the train had to slow down when it went trough R.I. . If it didn't, he wouldn't have time to announce that they were entering and leaving the state.
