Parents Say Boy Wanted His Hair Cut That Way
BARLETT, Kan. -- There's controversy at a Kansas school after a teacher shaved the head of a 6-year-old boy because of his haircut.
Derby McReynolds had his hair cut in a short Mohawk.
Bartlett school officials said that was unacceptable, and sent him home.
His parents trimmed the boy's hair to what they said resembled a military cut.
The next time Derby went to school, the principal had a faculty member shave the boy's head.
"They said we were being unfair to Derby, by letting him cut his hair cut that way. He wanted it that way. If you ask me, they were being unfair to Derby by not allowing him to keep his hair the way he wanted it," said Casey Sandusky, the boyfriend of Derby's mother.

I think the school over stepped their authority in this case. If a Mohawk is against the dress code, fine send the kid home. His parents tried to remedy the situation, and sent him back. That did not give the school the right to cut his hair, they should have sent him home with an explanation of what would be acceptable.
There was also no mention of a dress code violation either.

Regardless of the situation, if a school official/teacher had done that to my child, the police would be taking me away in handcuffs and the official/teacher in a stretcher.
The should have sent the kid home a second time instead.

I never understood what a hair style or color had to do with preventing an education. I would much rather see a kid with a purple mohawk than some 9 year old with hair down to his ass looking like a little girl. There are several of those in my son's 3rd grade class.

Amen on that. Not that my kid would ever have a hair style that dumb looking.

Mine had some goofy looks, but I let him "win" that one. Any teacher puts a hand on my kid goes home with his teeth in an envelope.
