Serious question: Who the hell are Jon and Kate?
and why should I care?
Am I culturally illiterate for not knowing?
Not even opaque...just plain transparent.

This is a familiar tactic on DU, so I'll translate the post from smug self-appointment to actual intended meaning:

I'm ashamed to admit this, but I've been following that Jon & Kate story pretty closely. I'd love to discuss it, but I'm just too ashamed to put my opinion out there without first knowing how other people feel about them. Would someone please identify with my post and say something about Jon & Kate, so I can judge what you say and construct a response that engages you, but keeps clear that I'm culturally superior to you all?
Thank you.

Yeah, me too. Actually Ree added to my knowledge in that post, I had figured out the "8" was kids and caught some miscellaneous headline or bit of radio talk about the supposed affair, I didn't know anything about the Kate part at all...though there was a one-sentence soundbite on the radio news this afternoon while I was driving between assignments that sure rings true with Ree's post.

It's a show about a woman who has a total of eight kids, and has so little self esteem and such a poor sense of self identity that she's taken on the persona of a celebrity as offered by the network promoting her. She's grown increasingly more vain and self-centered, though the reason for her status creates an internal conflict. Her lack of self-worth caused her to abuse her husband, who has sought the approval of a woman outside the marriage.
Their life would improve dramatically were the show cancelled, but all parties are on a money train that all are loathe to stop.

I get it! Another stinkin' reality show. What the hell would we do without them? Americans would have to get back to living their own lives, what a pity.
I never have watched this crap. I fail to see any value in it at all.
-
I have no clue what this is about.

Unfortunately, my wife is a big fan. I'd rather listen to North Korean folk songs than watch it, myself.
