Todd Krainin for The New York Times
IMPERIAL, Calif. — Ten minutes into arrant mayhem in this town near the Mexican border, and the gunman, a disgruntled Iraq war veteran, has already taken out two people, one slumped in his desk, the other covered in blood on the floor.
The responding officers — eight teenage boys and girls, the youngest 14 — face tripwire, a thin cloud of poisonous gas and loud shots — BAM! BAM! — fired from behind a flimsy wall. They move quickly, pellet guns drawn and masks affixed.
“United States Border Patrol! Put your hands up!†screams one in a voice cracking with adolescent determination as the suspect is subdued.
It is all quite a step up from the square knot.
The Explorers program, a coeducational affiliate of the Boy Scouts of America that began 60 years ago, is training thousands of young people in skills used to confront terrorism, illegal immigration and escalating border violence — an intense ratcheting up of one of the group’s longtime missions to prepare youths for more traditional jobs as police officers and firefighters.
“This is about being a true-blooded American guy and girl,†said A. J. Lowenthal, a sheriff’s deputy here in Imperial County, whose life clock, he says, is set around the Explorers events he helps run. “It fits right in with the honor and bravery of the Boy Scouts.â€

Kids seem to have been pretty well-trained in safe weapon handling. It sounds like a good program, I'm not concerned, and don't really see this is 'Ramping up' the police training other police-oriented Explorer posts get. That's one of the big draws they have for membership, after all. Did the NYT geek think the Border Patrol is the only police force in the whole country that breaks down doors? Jeeze, coming from that looney bin, he just might.

After reading the article, I got the impression the Slimes was trying to spark some controversy over the weapons and tactics being taught. I see nothing wrong with the training given them.
However, this still worries me.

And yet right there in the first sentence it's the "disgruntled Iraq war veteran". Nice way to "support the troops", liberals.
So how many of those "disgruntled" returning vets have we seen outside IVAW?

And how many of those at IVAW have been proven frauds? Only the most vocal with the worst lies to to tell. Stupid liberals.

I used to be involved in the Boy Scouts Explorer program with a local Sheriff's Dept. I was in it from age 14 to 21 along with the Big Show from WWE. God putting handcuffs on him during certain scenario's was a bitch. Anyway it kept me out of trouble and I learn a lot of things.

I don't see that at all. If you wanted to come up with a scenario for a workplace shooting, a vet with PTSD issues seems like an entirely reasonable background to make the shooter real for the players. It's been a staple of crime shows back into the Three-networks-all-black-and-white days of TV, completely aside from HSA's stupid report.

right, lets base our training on TV shows! good idea. I guess that means we can mostly ignore the gang crimes then, a huge part of all crime that is mostly ignored on TV

I read an article somewhere about the accuracy of crime portrayal on television. Needless to say, it varies from reality. LOL
