Oh man.

For the record, franksolich himself doesn't like onions in any way shape or form, but I thought this was worth bringing over here, because the primitives as usual jibber-jabber in their own language, quite unreasonably assuming the rest of us know what the words are.

ATK baked onion rings - not so great

I'm posting this because it's shocking when I try one of their recipes and it's not outstanding. In fact, this is the first, I believe.

I'm not even sure why this didn't work for me, but I'm sure it didn't.

Basically it has a batter of buttermilk, egg, salt, pepper, cayenne, flour. Then dipped into a fine crumb of a mixture of potato chips and saltine crackers.

Put onto a baking sheet with oil that had been heating in a 450 degree oven, so the onion slices sizzled when you put them on the sheet.

Anyway, not sure why I'm detailing the recipe while saying that it didn't taste so great! LOL, but whatever, FWIW.

Okay.  What is "ATK"?

1. The potato chips would turn me off not even sure about the saltines.

Panko bread crumbs popped into my head as being a better alternative. I may have to try that, because the rest doesn't sound bad!

Okay.  What is "panko"?

Highly uncharacteristic for her, the warped primitive doesn't illuminate:

4. That's just what I thought

"EEW! Why didn't they use panko?"

The only other things I might do to the batter are use a little paprika and a teaspoonful of sugar.

Grandma, second best to the warped primitive, doesn't illuminate either:

2. Yep.

As soon as a recipe includes potato chips and/or saltines, I pretty much move on. I don't think every ATK recipe is necessarily the best way to make something. I don't always care for some of their methods.

3. Onion Rings.

batter of buttermilk, egg, salt, pepper, cayenne, flour

That batter most likely works great!

Dip in plain flour first so the batter sticks.

Deep fry onion rings a few at a time.

Then drain and keep warm in a 250 degree oven while you deep fry the rest.

If you want to keep them after that, then - freeze them. Then baked to warm is ok.

No thanks on the cayenne and the onions, but the rest seems like it'd do.

Okay.  What is "ATK"?  No idea

Okay.  What is "panko"? A type of breadcrumb...really light and airy

Mr Flame makes a killer onion ring...uses Guiness in the batter.  Yummy.     I like cooked onion, but raw ones are nasty.   My youngest, on the other hand, eats raw onion like its candy.

My favorite was sliced red onion and pepperjack cheese sandwiches.

Frank, sometime try wrapping a large yellow onion in aluminum foil and cook it. Usually we do one when we go camping over a fire/grill. Cook it till it's soft. They become soft and sweet. Really, really good!

Pepperjack and onion....sounds delish....have to try it....maybe on rye bread?

Frank...look for Vidalia, Texas Sweet or Maui Sweet onions to do in the aluminum foil. It can be hollowed out and put either some worchestershire sauce or soy sauce in the middle too. I like jsut a bit of butter and salt and pepper.

Huge onion rings deep fried in pure hog lard from SAMBO's grill......to die for.

Which reminds, I am dying from eating to much of that stuff....but it was good. :-)

I think ATK might be "Atkins".  And only communists bake their onion rings.

The last place I worked that did onion rings cut them an inch thick, washed in a mix of Half-and-Half and coconut milk, and covered in panko crumbs before frying.  Serving them was a pain in the ass... you had about fourteen thick onion rings and you had to stack them on the plate in two individual towers and served with a ramekin of honey mustard and some other sauce (I forgot what it was) and garnish the plate with a sprinkle of finely-diced parsley.

Stupid primates...the Texas 1015's are in and onion burgers and rings will be consumed shortly.
