April 18, 2009 (PEORIA, Ill.) -- A Peoria man making a scented candle for his fiancee set their rented house on fire, causing $80,000 in damage and sending her to the hospital.
Fifty-eight-year-old Karen McCombs was treated and released after the fire Friday morning.
Her fiance, 64-year-old Joe Chavez, says he was in their unattached garage making the candle when flames shot up from the hot plate he was using, causing cardboard to catch fire.
He says he tried to extinguish the flames with sand but wasn't able to stop the fire from spreading to the home.

Huh? When I was a kid I made candles (http://www.plaidstallions.com/rapco/rap2.html), but never started a fire.

I melt lots off wax for my lost-wax casting. An open flame and wax are NOT a good combo, he shouid have used an electric heat source. Melting it on a flame is about on the same order of "Asking for trouble" as lighting a match to see how much gas is left in a 55-gallon drum.

I hope Atomic Lib Smasher is ok!

Well, that certainly puts more light on the subject of 'candle making'.
....and one should never let old hippies play with matches.
