Pirates attack U.S. cargo ship but fail to get aboard
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Liberty Sun, a U.S.-flagged cargo ship bound for Mombasa, Kenya, was attacked Tuesday by Somali pirates, according to a NATO source with direct knowledge of the matter.
The pirates never made it onto the ship. The vessel is now being escorted by a coalition ship, still bound for Mombasa.
The source could provide no details on where the vessel was attacked but said it is suspected the pirates were based on a mother ship somewhere in the area.

Not Again! US Ship Fends Off Pirate Attack
Heavily armed Somali pirates attacked a U.S. cargo ship Tuesday, lobbing grenades and firing automatic weapons towards the vessel, but failed to seize the ship before a Navy destroyer showed up to provide assistance.
No one in the 20 man crew was injured during the brazen attack, but the New York based ship was damaged, officials from Liberty Maritime Corporation of Lake Success said in a statement.
"We are grateful and pleased that no one was injured and the crew and the ship are safe," the statement from the Long Island based company said. "We have communicated with the families of the crew to inform them of these developments. We commend the entire crew for its professionalism and poise under fire."
The attack on the Liberty Sun occurred about 300 miles off the coast of Somalia at about 11:30 a.m., U.S. officials told NBC News.

This headline makes it sound like a bad thing that the attack was turned back. Who's side is the media on, anyohwait... never mind, silly question.

You know...once upon a time there was a place called the Straits of Hormuz. And lots of ships carring oil went back and forth through those straits.
Some very mean people in the evil land called Iran threatened to fire Onyx and Sunburn missiles at the ships carrying oil because they hated everyone.
Then a great man named Ronald Reagan said "this won't happen on my watch" and flagged all the tankers with the U.S. flag and told the U.S. Navy "protect those tankers from the evil people".
And the evil people stopped their threats of firing their missiles at the ships caryring oil.
Just sayin...

No, I just wasn't sure if it was negative or positive. The "Easter Sunday" part threw me off because I wasn't sure if that meant that it is insulting [to God] or not.
Anyway, I think the solution to all this pirate crap is to have a few snipers on every cargo ship and as soon as any pirate gets near you just shoot them. After a few rounds, I really don't think they'll be much of a problem anymore. Of course the problem with that is that a cargo ship now becomes a "war" ship with all sorts of restrictions on it. I'm not sure how WE'D feel if China had armed military on board their cargo ships that come into our ports.. so I can understand why other countries would feel concerned about us doing the same. But SOMETHING has to be done, this is getting just ridiculous. And if it is effecting EVERY country that ships through that area, why don't we all just team up against them??
-
What the "Easter" reference was to is the fact that the military works 24/7, holidays included....
at least that's MY experience and interpretation......

Obviously, if they had a union, they would get weekends and holidays off. [/dutrollmode]

Having spoken to some SEAL pals here in Virginia Beach yesterday and asking why this thing dragged out for 4 days, I got the following:
1. BHO wouldn’t authorize the DEVGRU/NSWC SEAL teams to the scene for 36 hours going against OSC (on scene commander) recommendation.
2. Once they arrived, BHO imposed restrictions on their ROE that they couldn’t do anything unless the hostage’s life was in “imminent†danger
3. The first time the hostage jumped, the SEALS had the raggies all sighted in, but could not fire due to ROE restriction
4. When the navy RIB came under fire as it approached with supplies, no fire was returned due to ROE restrictions. As the raggies were shooting at the RIB, they were exposed and the SEALS had them all dialed in.
5. BHO specifically denied two rescue plans developed by the Bainbridge CPN and SEAL teams.
6. Bainbridge CPN and SEAL team CDR finally decide they have the OpArea and OSC authority to solely determine risk to hostage. 4 hours later, 3 dead raggies
7. BHO immediately claims credit for his “daring and decisive†behaviour. As usual with him, it’s BS.
As expected.
