An undated photo of the MV Irene.
NAIROBI, Kenya – NATO says Somali pirates have hijacked another cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden, the fourth ship seized in the last two days.
NATO spokeswoman Shona Lowe says the Lebanese-owned MV Sea Horse was attacked Tuesday off the Somali coast by pirates in three or four speedboats. She had no further details.
Earlier, Somali pirates captured the MV Irene E.M., a Greek-managed bulk carrier sailing from the Middle East to South Asia. The Irene was seized in the middle of the night Tuesday — a rare tactic for the pirates.
Somali pirates appear undeterred by U.S. and French attacks that have killed five pirates in the past week during hostage rescues, including that of an American sea captain.
Pirates have vowed to retaliate for the killing of their colleagues.

The pirates took a new ship last night, one from Greece, and then this morning they have taken yet another, this one off the Horn of Africa, and it is a British ship. I don't have any more info yet, just wanted to post this, in case no one had seen it yet.
edited to add breaking news story. -- thanks DixieBelle

What is old is new again...........until civilized countries destroy the ports of these brigands, these events will continue to happen. Piracy is not acceptable, period.
Choke points around the world are now fair game. Search and destroy. :fuelfire:
-
All ships heading to these areas should be armed, and if any pissant little boats try to come close, blow them out of the water.
-
Time for the 5th Fleet to begin counter-Piracy operations.
Just start putting 5" rounds and anti-ship missiles through any and all identified pirate vessels whether actively engaged in an act of piracy or not and take out their base of operations on land at the same time.
-
Throughout maritime history and law, piracy is and has always been a capitol offense.
The only solution to this issue is to distroy any vessel that attempts to close with a merchantman after an appropriate warning is issued, and for forces to land in Somalia, kill everyone at their bases and ports, and burn them to the ground, and their vessels to the waterline. No prisoners will be taken.......

Blockade their ports entirely. Nobody in or out. Period.

Unfortunately the country of Somalia (if it can really be called a "country"), has over two thousand miles of shoreline, therefore the resources required for a blockade would be monumental......best to just follow them discreetly home, and stamp them out like roaches.......

I dunno. An announcement that any ship headed to or from a 250 mile excusion zone from their shoreline would be shelled would be a good start. Issue no further warnings. Our satellites and radar can do most of the "watching" for us.

Throw a few Predator drones into the mix.

True to an extent, however, Somalia lies directly in the main sea lanes from the Persian Gulf, and the Suez canal for vessels passing around the horn of Africa. There is an immense amount of shipping that passes through that area.
For a variety of reasons, private shipping companies have resisted arming merchant vessels, not the least of which is the fact that some countries (in the EU for example) will not allow armed merchantmen to offload cargo in their ports unless the armaments are first removed.
It is further impractical to provide an escort of warships for individual merchant shipping, unless we start forming convoys, much like was done during WW II, and then providing warship escorts......all of these alternatives are expensive, and are wasteful of naval assets. Just establishing patrols in the area (which I think is happening now) is obviously insufficient, as a small fast launch can intercept a merchant ship easily, where even the fastest destroyer could only make about 40 knots, and if not in exactly the right place at the right time could not intervene in time to prevent a hijacking.
Don't forget the pirates are equipped with radar too, and are likely only picking their targets when there are no other vessels around that might be a threat to their efforts......

Irritating other countries is part of the deal and adds pressure of the Somali government (such as it is). There would be no hijackings because there would be nothing to hijack.

There is no organized government in Somalia.......and even if they were "pressured", they have nothing with which to "police" the activities of the pirates......

I agree, but you forgot about salting the earth to prevent any resettling there.

Wait, so now there's 60 hostages since yesterday?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/piracy
Obama needs to tell them "guys, stop", that'd scare 'em.

There was one pirate that said his group would kill French or Americans if they caught them.

So I wonder what will happen should this fate fall upon American seamen?..........I pray for the Mayaquez, I fear we'll have a USS Pueblo

More breaking news, the pirates have attacked another ship, this time one of ours, but for some reason, were unable to board. No further details, yet. I guess attacking 6 ships in 24 hrs was their response to our world-wide beloved new President. They were only able to get the 3 of the ships, one is still under attack, a bunch of dolphins messed up one hijacking, and then the last one, the American ship, it is still not clear what has occured.
DixieBelle, thank you for fixorating/updating my OP. I had to go to see my specialist today. :cheersmate:

"Navy Thwarts Pirate Attack on U.S. Cargo Ship
The U.S. Navy successfully repelled an attack by Somali pirates who attempted to hijack an American owned cargo ship Tuesday by firing rocket propelled grenades and automatic weapons at the vessel, officials said.
No one was injured during the brazen attack, but the targeted ship was damaged, officials from Liberty Maritime Corporation of Lake Success said in a statement.
"We are grateful and pleased that no one was injured and the crew and the ship are safe," the statement from the Long Island based company said. "We have communicated with the families of the crew to inform them of these developments. We commend the entire crew for its professionalism and poise under fire."
The attack on the Liberty Sun occurred about 300 miles off the coast of Somalia, U.S. officials told NBC News.
"The pirates pretty much shot up the bridge, but no one was hurt," according to one source. The crew immediately requested assistance from the Navy, which dispatched forces that were able to thwart the pirates."
