The Pentagon and the White House are closely monitoring the hijacking of a U.S.-flagged cargo ship with a reportedly all-American crew.
Pirates seized the ship and the 20 crew members off the eastern coast of Somalia early Wednesday morning.
"The White House is closely monitoring the apparent hijacking of the U.S.-flagged ship in the Indian Ocean and assessing a course of action to resolve this situation. Our top priority is the personal safety of the crew members on board," White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said.
The U.S. Navy confirmed the hijacking and said it was monitoring the seizure with its own ships. The Navy's 5th fleet issued an alert Tuesday warning of an increased threat from pirates in the very region that the Maersk Alabama was hijacked.

Another test for "the messiah".
It will be interesting to see how he deals with the hijacking.
CINCPAC ought to assemble a task force on his own, and dispatch that task force to the waters off Somali.
If "the messiah" fires him, it will be a PR disaster for "the messiah" because it will highlight the incompetence of our new SINK.

A SEAL team with instructions to take no prisoners, would go a long way to send the right message.

This "Commander" in Chief? Uttering those words? Together? In the same sentence?

This "Commander" in Chief couldn't send that message if someone printed it out for him on that red, yellow and green three line paper that my son uses to practice his letters, and dashed in all of the letters for The Rookie to trace with his ****in' crayon.
I recommend that those sailors get comfortable and practice bashing their heads into the rug 5 times a day. The last time a complete incompetent faced a situation like this, it took 444 days and a new president to get them released.
-
The correct liberal response would be to apologize for even having ships, much less foolishly allowing them to touch any water than is even remotely connected to the Somali coastline. He would then ask to have someone in his Administration be premitted to kill the 20 Americans so that the Somali's don't waste their own bullets.

Gee O,that bow the other day really impressed them didn`t it.
Simpering idiot.

Who knew that "The Challenge," or at least one of the first of many, many to come, would be from a bunch of assholes with small arms and speedboats?

Now the Pentagon is saying the crew might be back in control of the ship:
US crew may be back in control of hijacked ship
WASHINGTON – The Pentagon says it appears the American crew of a hijacked ship has regained control of the vessel.
Pentagon sources spoke on condiiton of anonymity because informatiomn was still preliminary. But sources say the hijacked crew apparently contacted the private shipping company they work for.
The shipping company, Maersk, has scheduled a noon press conference in Norfolk, Va.

I'm hoping for some dead pirates or some live tortured ones. :uhsure:
-
Exactly how does a little boat like that take on a huge vessel ? Can't the crew just drop a grenade in their laps ?
I also thought, since the Cole, little boats are allowed to be blown up now, questions later?

Most cargo ships don't carry grenades. Those pesky US laws prohibiting "Distructive Devices" and all...

Don't worry; with Hopey McCokeChanger in charge, your hopes will be changed.

4 pirates, one was captured the others "tried to escape" ...so were they shot?

Cargo ships aren't normally armed....but apparently they should be when in the Indian Ocean. One 50 cal round through they guy with the RPG would work nicely.

The crew of a hijacked U.S. cargo ship is in a standoff with Somali pirates after attempting to retake the vessel, military sources told CBS News correspondent David Martin.
The sources told CBS News that crew members overpowered the pirates, taking one into custody, but the hijackers still held the ship’s master hostage. The American crew is in control of at least part of the ship and crew members have been in contact with their families.
There has been no official confirmation regarding the ship’s status.

Looks like the pirates are still on part of the ship.
-
Take note pirates, the name of the ship is ALABAMA not OBAMA.....and it's flying the American flag because it has an American crew.
We done come over there and kicked your pirate ass one time....200 years ago. I guess it's time to do it again.
-

Quite.
But then, since it's an effective solution, you can bet the house that this Administration will NEVER implement it, or permit it to be implemented.
-
Fox News was talking to the wife of the 1st officer and confirmed that he called her using an international phone he purchased on a previous cruise letting her know that YES the crew did regain control of the ship.
Too bad the crews of the other ships which have been hijacked over the years didn't have the gonads to take on the pirates. The American crew just showed what can happen when you don't sit around cowering.

Most recent report I heard was 1 captured and 3 "in the water". In the water on boats, face down and floating, sinking or swimming? They didn't say.

Seriously, wouldn't this be on par with someone trying to rob your house. I don't see why force is not being used...Shoot a bullet through their eyes. I"m sure this will deter this type of behavior in the future...Why are they being treated with white gloves...They are attempting to hijack a US ship....Blow them out of the water....What the hell is this country becoming?
The news channels are saying over and over...no weapons were used...WHY THE **** NOT? :censored: :banghead:

Silver lining I suppose...a group of unarmed Americans can still win over armed pirates.

Now ya'll know what the liberals and Euroweenies are going to say, "The Americans shouldn't have done that. It will only cause the pirates to bring more pirates and bigger weapons next time."
.....but then there may be some middle ground. We could mount a used 16" gun off an old battleship and shoot porkskins at'em.

Fox News Radio is reporting that the American crew has taken control of the ship back from the pirates. No story yet.
http://www.foxnews.com/
American crew members aboard a U.S.-flagged ship have regained control of the vessel hijacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia Wednesday, FOX News confirms.
Defense Department officials confirmed that one pirate is in custody. A U.S. official said the status of the other pirates is unknown but they were reported to "be in the water."
"All the crew members are trained in security detail in how to deal with piracy," Maersk CEO John Reinhart told reporters. "As merchant vessels we do not carry arms. We have ways to push back, but we do not carry arms."
John Harris, CEO of HollowPoint Security Services, which specializes in maritime security, said that the crew's overtaking the pirates could help prevent future hijackings, especially since the military can't be protect the entire high seas.
"Any time you can get intel from them, they can give you any kind of significant information, they more than likely will not, but anything we can get will always help us in the future," Harris told FOX News.

I just hope that one of the warships in that area steams to that cargo ship and provides some escort protection...I imagine that the Pirates might try another run at the Alabama since they don't take to well to having to steal a ship twice.

Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said earlier Wednesday the White House is "closely monitoring the apparent hijacking of the U.S.-flagged ship in the Indian Ocean and assessing a course of action to resolve this situation."

Fox reporting: AP: Crew member says pirates still holding the ship captain captive.
This isn't over yet.
Update: warship on it's way!!
-
American crew members aboard a U.S.-flagged ship hijacked by Somali pirates Wednesday were able to regain control of the vessel, but a crew member is still being held hostage, FOX News confirms.
U.S. officials said American warships are steaming toward the hijack scene.
A defense official said the Maersk Alabama's captain is being held captive on board a lifeboat belonging to the sihp, but a crew member would only say that a shipmate was being held, and would not confirm whether it was the ship's captain. Four pirates are in the lifeboat and according to the official there is no clear evidence that a pirate remains captive with the U.S. crew.

Hope the remaining hostage is released safely.

I haven't heard an update, but I popped over to Foxnation.com to see what people were saying. They are so proud, and needed a lift after Zero trashtalked us in Europe. Somali pirates are holding 14 ships and 260 crew members at the moment.
sad state of affairs when the whole world can't stop pirates from a backward dirtwater country

Either way, it's a win win....

The President needs to tell the pirates that they need to release every ship they have within 12 hours or we will put a 3 round salvo from some of those 16" guns right in that Somali town that they are based out of. If they don't send another 3 rounds every hour until they do or some cruise missiles.
Ohhh wait....I forgot who was President...

From Redstate:
http://www.redstate.com/brianfaughnan/2009/04/08/have-the-pirates-read-the-market-right/
For the first time ever, Somali pirates have seized a US-flagged vessel - one operated by one of DoD’s primary shipping contractors, according to the New York Times.
...snip...
Piracy in this part of the world has been a growth industry, but this is the first time an American vessel has been seized. And it’s hard to imagine the pirates failed to notice that their prey was flying an American flag. Have U.S. ships been spared until now because pirates feared the last president more than they fear this one, or is it merely coincidence? Time will tell, but the initial response from the White House is a weak one:
A presidential spokesman says the White House is assessing a course of action to resolve the hijacking of a U.S.-flagged ship off the coast of Somalia.
Press secretary Robert Gibbs said Wednesday that the White House was monitoring the incident closely. Said Gibbs: “Our top priority is the personal safety of the crew members on board.â€
The White House offered no other immediate details about what actions it was considering.
Link ncludes video of Russian response.

In spite if electing a self-loathing Marxist wuss, Americans are still capable of kicking ass.
-
Like I said on another post, when they catch the pirates, they can kiss their ass goodbye. Kill the SOB's. Taking prisoners is idiotic and will not deter these outlaws.
-
I will probably talk out of turn here and I will promptly apologize if I have leapt to an erroneous conclusion. We know that there have been hundreds of cases of piracy along that seaway. That a US ship can be attacked and a shipmate taken hostage without several little pirate corpses floating in the sea is truly embarassing.
-
The US Navy has a guided missle cruiser on the scene, per Larry King's giant head.

A SEAL team with night scopes, orders to take no prisoners. Thats the message we need to give these scum. Of course the messiah would never order such an attrocity! Hell, he's probably already thinking of the punishment the crew should get for retaking their ship.

Scuba divers with spear guns, under the lifeboat, could give the pirates their annual rectal exams.

Of course it is, I was just testing to see if you knew. :p

I was thinkin about this while at work last night.
Remember how Blackwater lost it's security contract in Iraq?
Why hasn't the big boss over at Blackwater contacted the various shipping magnates and offer to provide on-board security for every ship which transits those waters?
Blackwater could form a 15-member security force split into two teams to operate in 12-hour shifts. Each team would have one M-60 and two SAW teams, three riflemen armed with M-16s with grenade launchers, and have an adequate stock of LAWs launchers to take on larger boats and a number of Stingers in case the pirates have managed to obtain helos.
ROE would be simple - if a small boat, like those used by pirates, motors to within 1500 yards of the cargo ship, the entire security force is called to stations. When the boat gets to within 500 yards one M-60 gunner would fire a warning burst. When the small boat IGNORES the warning and reaches 250 yards from the cargo ship, the entire force opens fire with the intent to destroy the boat and its occupants.
-
And that all the 16" guns I'm aware of are filled with concrete.
Damnit!
If ever there was a time to bring the New Jersey and the Iowa out of mothballs...NOW is the time and this is the perfect venue for them.

Yes, the Libs would have a field day with that.
They would have the Companies, crews, and security teams, in the world court for War Crimes. :hammer:
-
Aren't ship captains in international waters given wide latitude to protect their ship?
-
I didn't think the U.S. negotiated with terrorists.
I was thinking the negotiation should consist of making one large hole in the hull of the lifeboat below the waterline, and telling them if they don't harm the hostage, we'll pull them all out of the water to be tried for piracy. Harm him, or refuse to come onboard, and they are free to swim home.
-
One of the problems with bringing back the BB's is lack of skilled personnel. When they where brought out last time, they had to ask for volunteer GM's who where retired to come back in to man the 16in. Tooling for parts is also an issue. As far as a deterrent, they couldn't work inshore like a frigate or destroyer can. With the current Administration, they wouldn't be able to do what they do best. Pound the shit out of shore installations.
With Obama planning to cut the new littoral destroyer, and possibly new carrier construction, I doubt he'd consider the cost to refurbish the BB's.

They would swim back if they saw this coming at them.
