Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Monday recommended a broad range of budgetary cuts to high-tech weapons programs, including production of the F-22 fighter jet.
In a move that won mixed reviews from lawmakers on Capitol Hill, Gates said his $534 billion budget proposal represents a "fundamental overhaul" in defense acquisition and reflects a shift in priorities from fighting conventional wars to the newer threats U.S. forces face from insurgents in places such as Afghanistan.
He called for production of the F-22 jet to stop at 187 jets. The U.S. military has 183 jets in service now, so just four more would be funded as part of the fiscal 2009 supplemental budget if President Obama approves the recommendations. The planes cost $140 million each.
Lockheed Martin has already warned that ending this production would result in the loss of more than 90,000 jobs.
Plans to build a new helicopter for the president and a helicopter to rescue downed pilots would also be canceled. A new communications satellite would be scrapped and the program for a new Air Force transport plane would be ended.
Some of the Pentagon's most expensive programs would also be scaled back. The Army's $160 billion Future Combat Systems modernization program would lose its armored vehicles. Plans to build a shield to defend against missile attacks by rogue states would also be scaled back.

Meanwhile countries like North Korea...Iran...the USSR and the ChiComs are upgrading their arsenals to take us on in a conventional fight.

We knew this was coming. It's sad that Gates is being set up to take the fall. OTOH, I'd rather see him make these choices than let congress or 0Bama make the cuts. I'm sure that Gates budget isn't what will be the final one, though. Murtha and other idiots will get their military pork projects rammed through at the expense of what Gates thought was important.

So the govt is printing TRILLIONS of Zimbabwe style, counterfeit dollars to pay the bills...
and the defense budget is getting cut in a time of war. :thatsright:

Of course. Don't you know that expanding social programs for the terminally lazy is FAR more important than National Defense.

Just as the market was starting to rebound, our government attacks some of the biggest industries in this country. Way to go Mr. President.

Dammit. I'm really tired of this crap.

As usual R&D programs get cut.
And I believe that Gates is showing his true colors..................never forget he was the liberals choice

Me too.

This is just the beginning. The "sexy" programs are getting cut, but I think we all know where the eventual "slow bleed" will occur...in the troops in terms of quality-of-life, pay, extra deployments, etc...
This guy is going to make Carter's "hollow force" look like a steel tiger by comparison.

I never thought I'd see this happen twice in my military career.

With north Korea's recent missile test, it should be full speed ahead on the airborne laser system and the ground base missile defense system,
HOWEVER,
both of those programs are on the chopping block by the dems.
I'd sure as hell hate to live downwind from Seattle [damn I guess I'll have to move to new mexico to get away from the jet stream] because the north korean missile is suspected to have the range to deliver a nuke to Seattle.

Wait till they start giving out more early retirements like they did with Bubba running the show.
