Sailor Turned Jihadist Gets Max
Judge sentences Phoenix man to 10 years for leaking secrets
By John Christoffersen, Associated Press
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - A former Navy sailor convicted of leaking details about ship movements and the best ways to attack vessels was sentenced Friday to the maximum 10 years in prison.
U.S. District Judge Mark Kravitz said Phoenix resident Hassan Abu-Jihaad betrayed his country and endangered his fellow sailors.
"I cannot really overstate the seriousness of this crime," Kravitz said. The leak "does constitute a fundamental betrayal of your country and of your oath."
Abu-Jihaad was convicted last year of disclosing classified national-defense information. Prosecutors labeled him a traitor who was trying to help foreign terrorists replicate the bombing of the USS Cole, which killed 17 American sailors.
Abu-Jihaad, an American who is formerly known as Paul Hall and whose chosen Muslim name means "father of jihad," was a signalman aboard the USS Benfold honorably discharged in 2002.
He was accused of leaking details of the ship movements to operators of a Web site in London that openly espoused violent jihad against the U.S. The information included the makeup of his Navy battle group and a drawing of the formation the group would use to pass through the dangerous Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf in April 2001.
The ship was not attacked.
Abu-Jihaad did not speak during Friday's hearing. His attorney, Dan LaBelle, said his client maintained his innocence and appreciated the fairness of the court.
Prosecutor William Nardini said the former sailor praised the Cole bombing and believed fighting against his own country would make him a martyr.

He should be stood before a firing squad and shot down like the pig he is.
-
Too bad he's going to prison and not Sheriff Joe's jail--bologna has lots of pork in it.
That being said, he'll be "protected" on the inside, but I sure wouldn't want to pay THAT bill.

That's all they could keep him in prison for?
He got off easy! :censored:

Yep. He will be supported by islamic prison groups, and he will kill innocents when released. This is treason, but we don't try that crime anymore. I guess because it would convict all the democrats in office, and all the RINOs.
He should have gotten life at the very least. Now he's pardon bait for Obama.

I like the idea of an asteroid prison in one episode of "The Twilight Zone".

"I cannot really overstate the seriousness of this crime," But you're not going to punish it the way the Constitution and Title 18 USC expects treason to be punished, are you Kravitz said. The leak "does constitute a fundamental betrayal of your country and of your oath."
The price of betraying your country has really - REALLY - gone down over the last 235 years or so. Benedict Arnold and Ethel and Julius Rosenberg have got to be wondering where the hell were the judges who gave out these kinds of sentences when their death warrants were issued.
This ****er needs to dangle from a *******ed yardarm.

Ya know.. I agree with D6.
We used to hang traitors. It's well past time where we started doing that again. In public and carried live on every TV station.
